~ Jade

I couldn't face Harry. After what he said I didn't know what to think.
I think I forgot how to breathe at some point.

I kept replaying the conversation I had with Harry over and over, wondering if I could have done something different. But no, instead I had to be stupid and blow my one chance with the most amazing boy I had met.

I slammed my hand down on my desk and mentally groaned.

Why has he made my life so complicated?

"Jade!" My mother called from down stairs. "can you come here please?"

I pushed myself out of the plush chair I was sitting in and walked downstairs.

"Jade," my mother sighed. She was leaning on the counter, eating some cheese and biscuits. Her hair was tied in a tight pony tail, but had a few stray hairs that framed her face. She was wearing her around-the-house-clothes, which consisted of a pairs of sweats and a loose t-shirt.

"Do you want to go see Dr Richards today?" She asked. By her tone of voice I could tell that she expected me to say no. I thought about it for a moment. I didn't want to be here in case Harry decided to swing by and talk about yesterday's conversation, which could make it uncomfortable for everyone considering that he would be the one doing all the talking.

I nodded. She gave me a look as if I had another head growing on my crispy face.

"Well, if that's what you want," she said, grabbing the car keys from the bowl next to the flower vase. "I'll drop you there."

I shook my head.

She gave me a puzzled look.

"You're gonna walk?"

I nodded. I needed time to think.

Mum shrugged.

"If you want to," she sighed, putting the keys back in the bowl and sitting down. I nodded and started  to walk out the front door.

"Make sure you call me when you get there!" She called as I closed the door.

I got halfway down the street before it started to rain. The way to the clinic goes past Harry's house, something I never noticed until I had to walk. I stopped as I walked past, and started at the front door, deciding whether or not to knock and talk to Harry. I stood in the rain, staring at his front door for a good 5 minutes.
That's when Harry picked the perfect time to walk out the front door. I tried to hide behind the bushes and fence out the front, but I was too slow, and he saw me.

"Jade?"

Oh fuck.

"Jade, what are you doing?" He said, looking down at me, with a questioning look on his face. "Why were you standing in the rain? You must be freezing."

I stood up quickly and straightened myself up. The first thing I noticed about Harry was his face, all bloody and bruised.

I gasped. I lifted my hand and lightly touched his face.

"Oh this?" He said, rolling his eyes. "Johnno payed me a visit. You should have seen what he looks like," he laughed, letting out a small chuckle, his eyes then widened.
"He came asking about you." He stepped back slightly. "Why didn't you tell me that he liked you?"

I shrugged.

"You should have told me Jade," he said, his jaw clenched. Water started to drip down from his damp hair, down his face.

I shrugged and tried to walk away, but Harry grabbed my arm.

"Jade," he pleaded, "don't walk away again," his eyes started to water. "Please."

I wrapped my arms around him, pulling him towards me.

"Jade," he sighed, resting his chin on my head. I held him like that for awhile, before I pushed him away. He gave me a sad look. I opened my phone to a new page of notes.

I have an appointment.

He read the notes and gave me a short nod.

"I'll see you tomorrow then," he said, giving me another quick hug and a kiss on the forehead, before turning and going back inside.

*~*

"Jade," Emily said, scanning my face, " I wasn't expecting you to come."

I shrugged.

"Sit," she said, gesturing to the chair facing her desk. I had tried to dry myself as much as possible before coming here, but I'd been soaked. So it was pointless. I perched myself on the end of the chair, in an attempt to not soak the cushion.

Emily was flipping through a note book, "we didn't have an appointment." Her forehead creased.

I nodded.

"So why are you here?" She asked, leaning forward on the desk.

I shrugged again.

She sucked in a breath and let out a long sigh.

"Jade, I have other... patients I need to attend to. If you're not willing to talk to me, then I'm going to have to ask you to leave," she said with apologetic eyes.

I grab a pen off her desk, and a piece of note paper.

I like Harry, and I don't know what to do.

I wrote, hesitantly giving her the slip of paper. Her eyes scanned over the words I had written, before a bright smile appeared on her face.

"Called it!" she yelled pointing at me and laughing. I gave out a slight laugh before my face fell. I gestured to the piece of paper and lifted up my eyebrows, in a questioning way, as if to say "help I'm deeply in love with this guy, but I can't be with him because he's too good for me and I'm a mute, who is hated by the majority of everyone in the school I go to. So you might as well tell me I don't have a chance, and I'll give up on the idea of ever being in a relationship with him even though he said he liked me, I doubt that he does because I'm so messed up and I don't want him to see me like that so I'll end up living by myself with dozens of cats and die alone, then my cats will eat what is left of my body and no one will miss me because I don't have any friends."

"You should tell him how you feel," she said, her eyes never leaving mine. I looked down at my hands.

"Using your words, Jade," she sighed. All I could do was shake my head.

"Does he feel the same way?" she asked, leaning forward on her desk.

I nodded, smiling down at my lap.

"You should be with him," she stated.

I looked up at her like she was a crazy person.

"Fine," she said, putting her hands up defensively. "I was only trying to help," she said, laughing a little.

"You picked a good man, Jade," she said smiling at me, before starting to pack up her stuff. I gave her an odd look, but she took no notice of it.

How could she possibly know Harry?

She started to sort her things into neat piles, grabbing out clean slips of paper, obviously for her new patient. She ran her hands down her skirt, as if to get rid of the nonexistent wrinkles.

I let myself out after that, not bothering to say goodbye, as I was too preoccupied with the one question that was sitting in the back of my mind nagging me.

How does she know Harry?
