“Whaaa?” He exclaimed, obviously not fazed from being fought over and dragged. “You forgot?”
I scratched my head awkwardly before looking him in the eyes. “Yeah. Sorry?” I tried. At that he flung himself at me again in a hug. Yet I didn’t fight back, instead I slinked my arms around his body and pulled him in closer. One we pulled back I set my hands on his shoulder. “Mind jogging memory?”
“Of course! Though I don’t get how you could forget. Well it was when you came to the-“ He was cut off when someone hit him in the stomach. He keeled over and I let out a loud gasp.
“I-Italy!” I yelped in concern.
“Dummkopf! Didn’t you hear what they told us?” Germany growled angrily at the smaller man.
“Ow,” Italy cried. “That really hurt Germany.” He flailed around on the ground almost like a bug as he didn’t answer the question he was asked.
“Answer my question!” Germany demanded as he stared down at the crying Italian.
“No, I don’t remember! But it’s Haley.” He whined, trying to get his point across.
“I’m sorry guys but seriously, can someone explain?” I interjected, making them both realize that I was still here.
“Hai, hai. I do believe it is best if he explains.” I jumped slightly at the sound of the voice. Turning to the side I saw that it was Japan that spoke. When did he get there?
Letting out a defeated sigh Germany picked up Italy by the back of his shirt. “I guess we aren’t left with much choice. I’ll explain, follow me.” He didn’t even give me a chance to say anything before he turned to leave with Italy in tow. Thinking fast I scampered off after the Axis Powers, hoping to figure out what the heck was going on.
Apparently they were staying in a room at the hotel like I was so we went to their room. Interring I watched as Germany made his way over to a chair and sat down. Japan walked over at stood next to him, his eyes never leaving me. A small shiver ran down my spine but I ignored it as I walked over to stand next to the bed. I didn’t want to be rude and sit down without permission but I hated standing. The next thing I knew Italy had whizzed by me and flopped down on the bed.
Turning over me sat up and looked at me. “Sit, sit!” He cheered with a huge grin on his face. I graciously expected and sat down next to him. Obviously I was too far away for his liking so he scooted closer. By then he was practically sitting on my lap.
“Haley,” Germany started, looking at me warily. “What are your favorite flowers?” I felt taken aback and blinked a few times
“What?” I asked confused, narrowed my eyes in on his face.
“I asked ‘what are your favorite flowers?’” He repeated slowly, looking slightly annoyed.
“I know, I heard you but what does that have to do with anything?” I was starting to feel nervous now and couldn’t help but fidget in my seat.
“Just answer.” He demanded.
I bit the bottom of my lip as I reeled through my mind trying to think of what they were. “Cherry blossoms and Irises. Not in order,” Japan stiffened and I gave him a wary look. “So why did you need to know?”
Germany looked at me thoughtfully. “What about sunflowers?”
I raised an eyebrow a curious eyebrow. “You never asked for my favorite.” How did he know?
Leaning forward in his seat he placed his hand under his chin, looking deep in thought. “Do you know why these are your favorite flowers?” He asked slowly.
I shrugged my shoulders, trying to stay as calm as possible. “I don’t know they just are.”
He leaned back into his seat and sighed. “I’m not sure where to start,” He looked up at Japan but the Japanese man didn’t say anything. He just stood there, his eyes still on me. Italy suddenly took my right hand in his and I looked up at him curiously. A kind smile was placed on his face that seemed different from his normal goofy one.
“Well, we are the actual countries from the Japanese Anime Hetalia.” Germany paused to examine my reaction. I didn’t know exactly how to react. Was I supposed to laugh and excuse them of lying? Even if I was supposed to I didn’t.
“Go on.” I said as I took in a sharp breath. For some reason I wasn’t fazed. It felt like somewhere deep down I already knew what he just told me. They weren’t lying.
“When you were younger, maybe 10, your family went on vacation to Russia,” I nodded my head as he explained. Then the memory flashed in my mind and I flinched. Italy’s hand tightened around mine. “You were staying in Moscow. I believe it was the second night that you were there, your parents and yourself went out to visit the Kremlin,”
My chest tightened as tears stung my eyes. I wanted to yell at him to stop talking but no words came out. My whole being shook uncontrollably as he continued the story against my will. “A drunken man somehow wondered into the grounds. He bumped into your father and the two of them got into a fight. He then pulled out a gun and shot your father. Your mother shielded you and got shot herself. The man wandered off after that, caught later by the authorities.”
Tears started spilling out then, streaking my face. I had tried to forget that memory as best I could. Burring it deep down and suppressing it. I never thought about it or brought it up. None of my friends even knew about it. No one knew I was an orphan.
“Germany! She’s crying!” Italy yelped, wrapping his arms around me defensively. I realized how cold I was once I felt his warmth envelope me. I pushed myself further into him, crying against his chest.
“Hai. Mr. Germany, I think its best we stop for now.” Japan interjected, his voice filled with concern.
“Nein,” Germany responded in a calm tone. I could hear a tint of sadness in it though. “She needs to remember. It’s hard but she must.”
“But-“ Italy started but was cut off.
“No!” Germany raised his voice and I flinched away from him. He let out a defeated sigh. “A man was watching the terrible event unfold. He watched as a young girl’s parents were massacred in front of her,” I looked up at him with wide, curious eyes. Germany met my gaze. “It was Russia.”
