Standing there with shaking legs I looked down at the bloody massacre that lay before me. Tears slowly pricked my eyes and poured down my face uncontrollably. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t scream. I could only stare at the dead bodies of my parents. Time seemed to slow down as my chest twisted and it suddenly became hard to breath.
My legs collapsed underneath me and I feel to my knees. Slowly and unsurely I lifted up a bloodied hand to my face. It wasn’t my blood. No, I was unharmed. It was my mother’s. She had shielded me with her own body. My mother protected me and it had cost her; her life.
Lying on top of my mother’s body I let out an ear piercing howl as I cried and cried. Screaming my heart and soul out I buried my face into the blood soaked material of her jacket. I wasn’t able to form any words. Only lay there and cry. No one was around at the time so I was left alone in shock to morn. No one to call an ambulance and rush them off to the hospital. Even though there wasn’t any hope for their survival. No hope at all.
I didn’t struggle when I felt large hands pulling me away from the dead bodies of my parents. I only continued to cry. When I was lifted up and set against someone’s chest I pushed myself into them, grabbing at their clothing and sobbing into it. My body twitched as I was carried away by the silent stranger. The man walked for a while with me in his arms, I wasn’t sure if it had been five minutes or an hour. Everything was distorted. The only thing I was aware of was a lonely scarf that I had taken refuge in.
I arrived into a room and was laid on a large bed. Without thinking I grabbed at the man who was carrying me and wouldn’t let go. He reluctantly sat down next to me and I curled up on his lap, continuing to sob. The man didn’t do anything, didn’t pet my head or reassure me in anyway. He didn’t even talk. I guess I was thankful for this. Somehow the silence was comforting.
I must have fallen asleep like that because the next thing I knew I woke up and it was day time. I lazily sat up and rubbed my eyes. Letting out a small yawn I slipped out of the bed and stood up.
“Breakfast.” I mumbled to myself, waddling over to the door. I bumped into a wall and backed up a few feet. Rubbing the throbbing spot on my head I looked up. There wasn’t a door there. Looking around in a small panic I realized that I wasn’t in my room. Calming down a little I remembered that my parents and I were in Russia. Something pricked at the back of my mind but I just couldn’t grab at it. I furrowed my eyebrows together in confusion, wondering what it was.
Scanning the room again I noticed that this wasn’t the hotel room we had been staying at either. Maybe mommy and daddy had change our hotels and gotten me my very own special room! I grinned happily at the thought. It was a really big bedroom. I wondered if there was a hidden miny bar somewhere. My stomach growled at the idea of food.
“Breakfast.” I murmured again, more urgently this time. Spotting a door I walked over to it and reached out to the handle. Opening up the door I stared out into the hall. I didn’t see my parents but I was really hungry. I’m sure I could find the breakfast place on my own. I was a pretty independent girl.
Walking down the long hallway I came to a stairwell. Peering down I saw that there were three floors below me. I spread my arms out wide and raced down the stairs, making airplane noises all along the way. I was nine but I could act younger sometimes, right? When I reached the second floor I could smell something cooking. Inhaling the scent I smiled. The food was close. Sprinting over to where the smell was coming from I flung the large doors open. Standing in the threshold I looked into a room. A short man with a long black pony tail was standing by a stove cooking something. When he heard the doors fly open he turned his head around.
“Ivan I told you food will be ready-“ He stopped when he saw me. He gave me a confused look. “Who are you, aru?” He asked.
“Um, my-my names Haley.” I said timidly, shyness suddenly washing over me. I held my hands behind my back and fidgeted my feet.
