"So what are you planning to do for my birthday?" I asked with a mouthful of spaghetti.

My parents looked at eachother and exchanged  a...maybe worried look? I couldn't tell. I watched as they had what looked like a mental conversation. My dad cleared his throat, breaking the silence. "We thought maybe we could just keep it small this year. Maybe just invite Sam over and hang out here." My Mom seemed pleased with this answer and nodded in agreement.

This took me by surprise. Every year my parents go all out for my birthday. My parents were know as the "cool" parents because of this. Not that I had many friends who called them that or many friend in general. I had a group of friends that I hung out with every so often but I felt as if I couldn't be myself with them.

Sam on the other hand had been my best friend since kindergarten. I could still remember the day we met. I was sitting on the reading carpet listening to "Clifford the Big Red Dog"  when someone tapped my shoulder. I turned around to see a small little girl with big blue eyes and short brown hair. She was the prettiest girl I've ever seen.

"My name's  Sam. We both have an A in our name wanna be friends?"

I was dumbfounded. This pretty girl just talked to me. How did she know my name? "How do you know that I have an A in my name?"

She tapped my back. Then I realized. "Oh ya. I forgot we had name tags." My Mom has put my name tag on my back because I was a hyperactive boy and she knew I'd probably rip it if I saw it.

"So are we friends or not?"

"Oh ya sure." I gave her a big smile. She was my first friend.

"Is that ok?" The deep voice brought me back to reality. I nodded my head and gave a smile. My mom let out a deep breath. She must've been holding it, nervous to hear my response.

"Thanks you guys." I stood up and took my plate to the sink. Just glad that Sam was gonna be able to come.
