Present day

"Mother, am going to walk the dog with my friends!" I yelled at the stairs "Okay Inés, but put on a jacket it's cold outside!" I heard her response and rolled my eyes it was a sunny day with no signs of rain or wind, but nevertheless, I put on a jacket "Okay, see you later, mom!" "Be careful!".

I picked up Laika's leash from the table. "Laika, come here" I said while I got on my knees to put the leash on the 2-year-old husky. "Ready to go Laika?" I said while I was getting up to get my keys from the table. Laika barked excitedly and started to follow me outside. I chuckled to myself and started looking for my friends.

I found them on the other side of the street. I smiled, my eyes full of mischief and playfulness, I started creeping over my friend Kiara, that like the rest of my friends, hadn't seen me or heard me for that matter. "Kiara" I said while I pushed her lightly. She screamed bloody murder. And as expected she turned around "Ines!" and proceeded to hit my arms. "Hello to you to" I said in a playful tone. By now she stopped hitting my arms and resorted to glare at me like I killed her dog Kai, which was content with playing with Kiara and unaware of his owner's conflict.

"Really? I was just playing with you" I put my arms around her shoulders with my head resting in one of them "I am really sorry, can you forgive me" I said smiling, I could tell she was close to breaking her facade "Fine, but don't do it again" we all knew that wasn't gonna happen but for the sake of acting "Of course".

I greeted my other friends and we were on our way to the woods of the dead, unoriginal name? Pretty much yes but there is a story behind it and that's the reason we are going over there.

"Jason, why are we going to the forest?" I heard Kayla, Mark's older sister, she's 16 like most of the group, including me, except Mark and Lira who are 15.

"Do you know the story of the asylum in the woods of the dead, Kayla?" By know I could tell Jason was expecting her to say no "Of course am familiar with the story but I have never heard it till the end" responded Kayla with a slightly untrusted tone. We all knew how much Jason got into telling a story.

"Well today is your lucky day, you are going to know the complete story" he was now smirking, his eyes shining with excitement. We rolled our eyes and prepared for a long walk.

"Okay, so it all started decades ago when the town decided to build an asylum for psychopaths since the people didn't want to have nothing to do with it. It was decided that the asylum will be built at the outskirts of the town, inside the forest." Kayla raised an eyebrow "Wasn't the forest name 'the woods of the dead'?" She asked confused.

"Well at that moment the town was 'new', so the forest didn't have a name, later on after an event, it was named 'The forest of the dead'." He proudly said, after all, he has done a lot of investigation about this topic. "Why?" Mark who likes its sister was now intrigued with the old legend.

Jason liked the attention, he responded smirking "That question, am afraid will be answered later in the story". Now everyone let out a sigh of exasperation at Jason's  antics when telling a story, specifically the old legend of the asylum.

"Hey, I have to keep the best for the end don't I?" he crossed his arms in defense. I chuckled at him. "Well just get on with the damn story" growled Kiara clearly annoyed by Jason's antics "Okay, Okay" Jason raised his hands in surrender. Kiara smiled obviously pleased with the result.

"Well, where I was at?...Ah yeah... it was decided that the asylum was going to be built at the forest, away from the town, so the construction started a couple years after the decision, when the psychopathic behaviors started rising in the town, and since in those times it was believed to be a contagious disease, the town demanded the asylum to be ready. A couple of years later the asylum was finished and the poor souls were locked up there by their families, it's believed that the doctors there tortured their patients to the point of death" We were all silent as Mark and Kayla gasped in surprise, their eyes widened with terror for the poor souls and unbelieving that person should be capable of doing such horrible things, such naive thoughts.

I realized that there were only a couple of meters left to get to the forest, I smiled to my self "The last one to get to the forest is a rotten egg" I yelled while running down the hill  with Laika by my side, trying and succeeding to be the firsts to arrive to the forest. As expected the others were on my toes trying to catch up with me and Laika, who was running excitedly if I may say.

"First" I declared while gasping for air, my hands on my knees. "That's not fair at all" Kiara was now pouting at me. I blushed a little bit. "Well darling nothing in this life is fair" I smirked. Kayla blushed at the nickname and quickly looked at the other way "whatever" she muttered at the same time that Kai, her 2-year-old German Shepherd, tries to cuddle Kiara. She chuckled and crunched on her knees and petted Kai.

"Are we gonna enter or not?" Asked a clearly annoyed and jealous Jason. Inés unaware of him being jealous. "Don't be such a grumpy" I laughed as I put an arm around his shoulder.

Kiara's eyes were a little bit dark with jealousy and sadness. She tried her best to ignore the jealousy that she felt coursing through her veins, resorting to playing with Kai instead. Inés oblivious to Kiara's change of emotions.

"Well let's go guys" I said, and we entered the forest of the dead.

Unaware of what awaits us in the shadows of this mysterious forest full of secrets.
