Chapter 24

"Behind his, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo." as his sled slowly came to a stop on the bottom of the powdery hill, he saw what he knew to be a house, rather a home. He saw the red, green, blue, and white lights though the frosted window. Gabriel was squirming and squealing from the journey down the hill while Jonas was attempting to hear the words sang by the family inside. " Silver bells, silver bells, it's Christmas time in the city," they sang. Jonas saw shadows cross the windows covering the shimmering lights. ''What a wonderful sight'' Jonas said to Gabriel. The singing stopped abruptly as they gathered around the window to see who was outside. Gabriel took his pudgy little hand that was now ice cold and waved. "He has come! Just like the man said he would!" he heard them say. The door creaked open to the inside and out came a little girl with burnt orange locks that reminded Jonas of Fiona. He missed her dearly but knew it was safer for her in the community. The little girl hid behind the door only poking her head out enough to see Jonas. He heard a voice from inside the house whisper "Well let them in! We have much to talk about!" the voice said. "W-w-would you like...to come in?" the little girl proposed and Jonas replied excitedly "yes, please we are very cold."

"Dearest Jonas, At the community there is nothing but pure chaos since you left. No one is taking their injections and people are wandering the streets crying, screaming, and stealing. I should've trusted you, went with you. I apologize for that. Asher and i have a plan. We are going to try to find you. The Giver came up to us in private and told us you were gone past the boundary of memories. He gave us a map to find you and told us which route to take, not long after that he was released. Jonas, i watched the light fade from his eyes as a tear fell down his face. His last words were "i'll see you soon, Rosemary." do you know what that means? I have something quite important to tell you and will write again soon.

Love, Fiona"

Gabriel looked around at the shining lights and big bright bows on the colorful wrapping paper. He seemed to like the environment. That and he had found a playmate; a boy around his age. He showed him his toy which he called a car. It was nothing more than a block of blue painted wood with wheels but they both seemed to enjoy watching it roll across the floor with ease. As Jonas looked up, he was met face to face with the little girl from earlier. "Hi, im Amelia! I've heard a lot about you, but not much. Only what mommy and daddy talk about when they think i'm not there, listening." Jonas wondered why the family knew about him, and how. The Giver had never mentioned this to him. That he was known, other than in the community. "Do you know where your parents are? I'd like to speak with them." Jonas asked inattentively. "I'll go find them, can you watch my baby doll? Her name is Rosemary." she replied, and got Jonas's attention more so than anything else the girl had said previously. He nodded still curious about the name of the doll. His thought was interrupted by the squeal of the two boys. They were pulling on the multicolor lights on the tree. It was a different kind of tree, like the ones in his memories, but had an offsetting appearance. He had never encountered this type of tree before. It wasn't made out of wood and bristles, but what he had become quite familiar of; plastic. He watched the joy light up Gabriel's face, like something he had never seen before. He felt love for Gabriel, but not the kind he felt for Fiona. The love he felt for Fiona was a mix of care, affection, love, and lust. But yet there was pain there too, along with all of these wonderful, butterfly like feelings. A loud crash brought Jonas out of his train of thought. He stumbled to his feet as he watched the wonderfully colored and decorated tree collapse and fall to the ground taking the boys with it. Jonas lifted up the tree with ease thinking it would be heavier. The boys stood up, stunned. Acting almost as if nothing happened.
