Part 1
I started to stare into space, my hands on the warm desk where you come to order what you want, until Elliot Careln started to walk towards my bakery. Even with all the commotion coming from people who fill the dirt dusted streets with shouting and gunshots, feels like an apocalypse sometimes due to all the crime that's in this area, I could see him as clear as day.
I owned a small bakery my father built for me by using a large tree and splitting it in half for floors and using thick wooden planks for walls. He, my father, placed sod on top for a roof, it also comes in handy so I could plant my own vegetables and fruits. I find no use in going to a store and buying crops that you could plant or make yourself. My father, my 2 brothers ,and myself decided to come to California because of the gold rush. Originally we came from a small town in Italy.
I looked at his face, freckles dusted over his cheeks, blonde hair and crystal blue eyes. He was very handsome boy at least in my opinion. A small blush crept across my face like when you accidentally spill a cart of raspberries on the wooden table you have in your bakery. "Good afternoon, ma'am," he said with his hoarse voice probably because of the hard work miners do to find gold even though I doubt there's any, but I still like to see people try. I find it funny.
"G-good afternoon," I managed to say with my Italian accent while trying to make eye contact with him but I was struggling.
"Could I order a pie? I have to go back to the mines"
"Y-yes, of course!" I stuttered back.
"Miss Aradia, are you alright? Your face looks a bit flush,"
"Oh yes! I am perfectly fine!" I said while brushing a small streak of my brown short hair out of my face.
"That will be 15 cents," I said strongly now feeling I have a grip on myself.
"Oh okay," Elliot said as he pulled out a couple of cents out of his pocket. I noticed how he wasn't struggling while on the other hand I was. As I was heading to the kitchen to get started, I looked down at my pale blue dress and my big leather boots. I was very embarrassed. I forgot to clean up before, so there was some flour on the ground because of my clumsy self. But on accident, I slipped on the flour. BAM! It was such a loud noise it sounded like one of the guns that were shot during the day. The one that rings in your ears for a couple of seconds afterwards.
"Miss Aradia!", Elliot shouted from the other side of the room, "Is everything alright?"
"Yes, yes," I tried to chuckle off while brushing the dust off of my pearly white apron and pale blue dress. Right then and there I just wanted to cry, but I knew I couldn't. So, I got up, and went to work even though I was upset. I went to my basket, pulled out 3 eggs that were room temperature, grabbed 1 glass of milk, and 2 cups of flour. I began making the crust for the pie. I honestly couldn't think straight. I felt my eyes get glossy with tears. Then, right there, a hot tear went down my face. One after another, I tried to wipe them off but they kept on coming. I looked up. I forgot that I had a mirror, covered in flour and dust, where I baked. Even though it was dirty I could see how red my face was. It wasn't pretty. I guess I was weeping loud enough to make Elliot call for me once again.
"Ma'am," He pushed open the wooden half door that lead to the kitchen. He looked surprised when he saw my face. It made me feel even worst.
He grabbed my hand. I felt my heart flutter with joy and nervousness. He looked at me with full eye contact and said ,"It will be alright. Don't worry," and gave me a warm smile. My face reddened like when you've been in the sun for way to long and you have to put a wet cloth to sooth the pain. I took my other and held his in mine. I gave back the warm smile he gave me and said nothing. Just smiled.I hope you guys like it haha...
