"All right, girl, we're headin' out." Ellen slings her bag over her shoulder, making her way towards the back door.
She and Jo had received a call from a family friend who seemed fairly paranoid about something happening in town. Naturally, they hopped to their feet, anxious to get on to the next case. With only about a day left for Dean, I'm partially glad that they will be away from all of it. But they will eventually find out...and chew my head off.
"Drive safe," I say, tightly wrapping my arms around Jo.
"Won't be a problem," she smirks, dangling the car keys in front of her. Ellen immediately snatches them out of her hand, causing her daughter to frown.
"Where are the boys?" Ellen asks, looking behind me.
"Oh, they're down in the basement helping Bobby with some things."
Lie. Bobby found a way to figure out where Lilith is.
"And what does that make us? Chopped liver?" she jokes, unaware of the fact that the boys couldn't even muster seeing them leave.
"Lucky for you, I happen to like chopped liver." Ellen smiles and shakes her head, pulling me in to kiss my forehead.
"Love you, baby girl." She starts out the door with Jo in tow.
"Tell the boys we said 'bye'." I pause and stare at the beautiful young woman before me, the façade plastered on my face quickly crumbling.
What do I do? Do I tell her that the man she's been falling for won't be here when she gets back? Or do I play dumb and act like everything is all right?
"Yeah," I nod, the bitter words stinging my lips. "Will do."
She gives a tight smile and abruptly wraps her arms around me. "Take care of them," she whispers, my hair muffling her voice.
"Don't I always?" Jo pulls away, scoffing, and then heads out the door with one final wave. "Text me when you get there!" I yell, smiling as she gives a thumbs up over her head.
As soon as their car door shuts, Dean bursts into the study from the basement, obviously heated from whatever happened down there. He briskly marches over to an open chair and drops down into it, his eyebrows furrowing as he intently stares off into nothing. Bobby then emerges, barely acknowledging me as he makes his way to the garage.
A moment passes, the awkward air blanketing everything in the room. In order to alleviate the tension, I resort to the only thing that comes to my head – humor – which, in all honesty, isn't always the best option.
"I sense a domestic dispute on our hands," I half-heartedly chuckle at the poor joke, my smile dropping rapidly at the lack of a positive response.
