Border of Havluan, Half a year into the Great War

The  sun hung  low in the Eastern  sky. It didn’t give a clue whether  it was dusk  or dawn giving the illusion that  time was at  a standstill. The  man seen riding off into the horizon sure hoped it  was. However, things always  have a way of  going  against a man’s will.

The said figure was a young  man called Avun. He is the youngest of the Great Knights and one of the remaining five alive in the ancient  and most noble land of Elverion. His once pristine  silver armor was now covered in  blood and dented at places. His helmet s has long  been abandoned in the battlefield  while he was fighting against the warriors of Galledon Kingdom, the  long time enemy  of Elverion.

The  battle  has started from the break of dawn when the unsuspecting Elverios warriors, who were yet  to wake up from hear the horn being blown  twice, signaling the  approach  of  the enemies. Everyone  of the Elverios warriors were woken  up and prepared for the impending  battle. They  went into formation in an organized manner, characteristic  of the warriors  of Elverion.

The first  battle cry  was heard. Not long  after, the battle commenced. Sir  Avun and  the General in charge  of this battalion continued to give orders. The enemy  was more or less of the same  number. However, this hardly  made Sir Avun relieved. As he  was observing the  enemies coming  closer, he saw the  distinctive helmets  that they  wore. It  was made  of animal skulls. Moreover, they were not  wearing any  armor as if nothing would hurt them. As if they were invincible. Something clicked in Sir Avun’s mind. He was suddenly  filled with ominous feeling. It seems that  the other side was really  determined to defeat Elverion once and for all. And for the first  time  in a long  time, he was filled with dread.

It still sent  shivers down his spine when he remembered the  battle that  unraveled before him just  a few hours ago.

The more he remembered it, the more he felt his injuries hurt. The wound on his right  shoulder  was particularly throbbing. It was where the Egredon stabbed him. He was battling with the said  warrior swinging  his swords in an attempt  to deter the advances of his opponent. He stumbled just for a moment when he was taken aback by the sudden  swinging of the weapon that his enemy  was using. It was weirdly shaped and was a novelty  to him. The said weapon grazed his  right  shoulder and a sharp pain shot up his shoulder. He was  able to block the deadly  attack by his opponent by  squatting  down then swinging  his sword towards the Egredon which he has  successfully dodged. He was then caught  in another battle by two other  Elverios. He thanked Elveria for protecting him. Had he not  been in battle and his  life on  the line, he would have reveled in the small success. After all, very few lived to tell that  they have escaped death from the hands of an  Egredon who were the best  warriors of the  West and the worst  of humanity.

Exhaustion was now slowly spreading throughout  his body. However, this only  served to spur him on his journey. A journey to save the rest of his comrades. Hence, he continued riding his horse into exhaustion until he reached the camp two miles away  from the battleground. He only  hoped that  reinforcement  would come or they surely wouldn’t stand a chance. No, they didn’t have a chance at winning, but the reinforcements could mean the deliverance from death of his remaining comrades.

The sun had long set when he finally arrived at the Elverion King’s encampment. He dared not tarried and take a rest. Hence he proceded to the King’s tent in hurried steps. He was immediately  shown to the King’s tent. As he waited to be announced, he could hear moans coming from inside the tent. The groans and moans stopped once he heard the servant talk informing the King of his arrival. He heard the moans halt, followed by the shuffling of feet nearing the tent flap by which he was standing. He was then immediately shown inside the tent. He saw two women behind the King just before he kneeled on one knee as a sign of respect and loyalty.

As he relayed the news of the battalion’s impending doom, the King’s face grew more troubled and tensed. He immediately called for a meeting of the remaining generals and high officials. The rest was history.

The first battalion suffered a great defeat.

The crows tearing at the entrails and flesh of the warriors in a clearing that stretched for three kilometers were the only  living  creatures in the field. It would not have been an exaggeration to say that it was a field of headless corpse.

Such was the scene that greeted the reinforcements that Sir Avun has so fervently sought. And such was the sight that would haunt him on the darkest of nights, for the rest of his life.
