Day 16- saddest chicken moment
I'm writing this while listening to happy, upbeat Christmas music. This is not helping the mood -.-
My saddest moments-i'm adding 3- are:
1. When Racer died. It was in September, and we had just gotten chickens in June. She was pour very first chicken loss and it was the second worst ever. I remember the night before I was checking the chickens and she was roosted on the floor. Being new to chicken keeping, I noticed she looked kind of sick. I figured she was fine. I checked on them and let them out of the coop the next morning, and when I didn't see Racer, I thought she was probably still Sleeping, and opened the back of the coop. Her body was cold and stiff, and her face was pale. By the evidence, she had died onlyt a few minutes after I had checked on them that night.
2. Goldie- we had gotten 2 Americana chicks- Annabelle and Goldie. Goldie was obviously sick and we thought we could nurse her back to health. The next night, she started having spasms. I tried everything I could, cupping her in my hands the whole time. Finally, the spasms stopped and Goldie seemed to be doing better. Her breathing evened out and she had calmed down, so I put her back. I came back five minutes later. She was gone. Her body was still warm. Annabelle knew something was wrong, and she was scared, so we had to put a stuffed animal with her, but she wouldn't even accept that, so we had tp get her a new companion the next day, also to replace Goldie. This one was the most recent one, as both Annabelle and the new chick, Marigold, are only 4 months old!
3. Penny. It was my birthday, and only year after we had just gotten chickens. For late August, it was really nice out. Penny had looked a little skinnier and not as bright as usual, but just as friendly and sweet, if not sweeter. She knew something was going too happen to her, but I didn't. I fed just her the remains of my eggs that morning, and I had a great day, aside from school. After dinner and presents, I go in the backyard too check on the chickens. The sun was just starting to set, and laying on the ground, right in front of the coop entrance, was Penny. I picked her up. She was still warm. Crying, I pulled a few feathers off her tp remember her by, and we buried her. I can still remember the entire thing like it happened yesterday, and My birthday isnt the same.
