The Disturbance

Early the next morning, I awoke to a loud crash that sounded like it came from the kitchen. I shot up in his bed, my body frozen in fear. I calmed down when Jake snaked his arm around me protectively and started lightly snoring again. I layed back down thinking I had just imagined it. I went back to my former position, with me laying on my stomach and my head laying on his warm chest. His arm around me gave me a sense of protection. Like, he'd never let anything hurt me.

Last night was great. I brought my fingers up to my lips, bringing the memories of his soft kisses.  I rubbed my fingers down my jawline, following his kisses. I turned over gently trying not to wake him. I was facing him now. I took my fingers and rubbed them through his hair. I brought my hand to his hairline and gently brushed his hair back. Then I heard another loud bang and I pushed my hands against his chest. He jumped up. Surprised by my actions.

"Jess. Jess what's wrong?" Jake asked full of worry.

"I think there's someone downstairs!" I whispered. "I heard a loud bang earlier. I thought I just imagined it so i went back to sleep. Then I just heard it again." Jake jumped up and reached under the bed. I lost view of him as he crawled under it to grab what ever it was. When he popped back up, he had a baseball bat in his hand.

"Stay here. Take your phone and I'll come back up here to tell you when to call 911." He walked over to his closet and grabbed a white t-shirt and sweatpants. He quietly walked out the bedroom door. But before he walked completely out, he said "Remember the plan." And he walked out the door.

I stood up and got out of bed. I walked to the door with my phone in my hand. I quietly walked to the edge of the staircase hoping he wouldn't hear me. I already had 911 dialed on my phone. And I'm glad I did.
