"Holy..." Cato whispers as we all find our balance again.
We look back the way we came, as the fireball disappears.
"Quick, let's get back to camp." Cato tells us. We sprint back to camp, tripping and stumbling over logs and fallen trees.
We reach the edge of the forest, and look in dismay at the debris and rubble on the floor in front of us. Our pyramid of supplies has been blown up. Charred wood and burnt material littered the floor. What was our camp is now completely destroyed. All we have now is in the packs we carry.
Cato turns in circles, yelling and pulling at his hair. He falls to the ground and beats it with his fists before standing up as Joshua throws out some stones. "They all went off." He says, miserably. If he is to be scared at any time in the Games, this is the time. Cato's wrath will be something everyone will suffer.
Cato walks forward, into the debris and yells out in anger. We follow him, spread out over the remains and search for anything that hasn't been destroyed. Cato kicks open various containers as we search under every piece of debris for food, or a weapon.
Joshua did his job too well. It most definitely would have killed any tribute stealing, but would have killed us too. The idiot. I suppose we'll find out who it was tonight.
"You stupid, stupid boy!" Cato yells, grabbing Joshua's shoulders. "All our supplies, all of them! You blew them up! It's all your fault!"
Joshua escapes from Cato's grasp, and he runs away as fast as he can. To no avail. Cato catches him up and gets him in a headlock from behind. His arm muscles ripple as he jerks Joshua's head to the side. Joshua's body crumples to the floor.
"Cato! Calm down!" I shout from the other side of the wreckage.
"I won't calm down!" He yells, turning to face me. Marvel gets in between us as Cato starts to advance on me, even though I know he won't hurt me. Much. The cannon for Josh fires.
"Cato, you'll hurt us! We're also feeling like you!"
"Who did it? Who was the idiot who blew up our supplies?" Cato yells in Marvel's face.
I hurry towards them, stumbling over rubble.
"We'll see in the sky tonight! There'll be Josh, district 10 and whoever did it!" I say, pointing to the sky.
"Well obviously, Clove, but what use is that to me now?"
"Nothing, they'll be dead! There's nothing you can do! Stop freaking out!" I yell back.
"You're not helping!" Marvel yells. "We won't get anywhere with you two fighting like idiots! Calm down and we'll find somewhere else and see what supplies we have!"
"You shut up, Marvel! We just lost everything! What supplies could we possibly have? Are you an idiot?"
"Shut up!" I scream at them. "Marvel's right, we need to calm down and stop arguing. Okay? Calm down, stop freaking out and we'll see what we have!"
Cato looks at me for a long time.
"Okay, Midge, sorry. We'll see in the sky tonight."
We move off to the lake and let the hovercraft move in and take Joshua's body. We empty our packs and see what we have. From Marvel's pack we have one sleeping bag, a bag of dried fruit and the remains of the rabbit from the other night. I have the antiseptic cream in my pack, along with a bandage, my night vision glasses, a bag filled with berries and a flask of water and iodine tablets. Cato has a spare spear head, some leftover squirrel, a few berries and his night vision glasses. Our weapons are the only ones we have on us.
We sit by the lake and look out over the water and drink the last of the water in the flask we had between us. I get up to refill and we wait half an hour for the iodine tablets to set in and clean the water. We eat a few of the berries but none of us are really hungry. The fact we have lost nearly all our supplies has hit us hard. What do we do now?
In past years when the career tributes have lost the games it has been because they lost their supplies. Some years it was a tidal wave. Other years they were ruined by something. But they have never, ever been blown up with mines.
Darkness sets in and we wait for the seal of The Capitol and the anthem. I am anxious to see who the thief is. When it does come, Joshua's face appears first, then the boy we killed early this morning, from ten. Then the sky goes black.
"What?" Cato yells at the sky as he jumps to his feet, outraged. "They survived?"
"What the hell?" Marvel says.
"How did we not see them?" I wonder out loud.
"Because they're bloody magical." Cato says sarcastically.
"Oh yeah, obviously." I retort.
"Don't start again, you two!" Marvel says. "They can't have gone far, let's look for them."
Cato and I slip on our night vision glasses and Marvel snaps a thin branch from a tree and lights it from the little fire we had going. Once the fire is stamped out, we head off into the woods to hunt for tributes. We come across none.
"Let's just stop here." I say, once we reach an area of flat land. "We can unzip the sleeping bag and share it, and use the leaves and things to help us keep warm. We can get up early and continue, but for now, I'm exhausted."
Cato sits down beside me and puts his hands on his head. I sit next to him and put my hand on his shoulder. Marvel gets the sleeping bag out of his pack and unzips it. He sits beside me and pulls it up to our chins. Cato puts one arm around me as Marvel pulls the bag of berries from my pack. He puts it in front of us, but none of us take any.
I lie down, and the others do too, as Marvel puts the berries away. Soon, fatigue takes control and I fall asleep on Cato's arm.
