"Thomas!" At the sound of my name from down the hall, I snap up from the paperwork I had spent the previous hour going through.
The hazardous sway of Rachel's blonde ponytail as she weaves her way through the other staff and patients. She arrives next to me with a little jump, a massive grin on her face.
"Guess what?" She bounces on the spot with anticipation to spill no doubt the latest gossip.
"Hmm? Is someone dating someone again?" I inquire with a smile and a roll of my eyes.
"Nopeeee! I got a promotion!" Rachel squeals in delight.
"Oh wow," I laugh, "Who gave it to you?"
"Dr. Fitzmorris. He said I've worked hard, shown my worth in my current position and wants to see me excel further in my work. I get a payrise and everything!" She smiles, "He wants the best for me and my future, he wants to help shape it." Rachel rambles on as the smile nearly slips from my face. Luckily she is too caught up in her own world to notice the change in my demeanour.
I had forgotten about the deal with Fitzmorris. Should one even call it a deal? The threat. Me or her. One lives, one doesn't. And the only way I survive is if I end this girl's life. Her promotion had to be a set-up. A reminder I didn't want to remember.
"Thomasss? Are you even listening?" I snap back into the real world as Rachel pokes my arm.
"No he isn't, don't blame him, he got too caught up on remembering the delicious pork rib rack he is having for lunch." Silas' hearty laugh comes from behind as he rests his hand on my shoulder before flicking my forehead.
"I was listening, and it's clear you've been thinking about the ribs too much." I roll my eyes at my boyfriend.
"Hmm food. How does lunch on me sound for later?" She adds.
"On you? I better find us a Michelin restaurant and eat a 5-course meal." Silas smiles as he grabs my pile of paperwork. "Catch ya later Rachel."
Rachel springs away muttering under her breath, but I catch the words 'higher payrise'. Running my fingers through my hair, I turn to look at Silas, to see a smile that doesn't meet his eyes.
He walks off, setting a fast pace, beckoning for me to follow with a cock of his head. I sigh before trailing after him. We make a way to an isolated section of the ward before he drags me into a room, shutting the door behind me. Silas grabs my shoulders and pins me up against the wall with a thud. A dull ache begins in my head.
"You need to do it." Silas' grasps my collar.
"I-" He shuts me off before I can continue.
"No Thomas. Listen to me. You need to do it today." SIlas' tone is unwavering. I gulp.
"Silas-"
"Shut up." He aggressively thumps his hand on the wall next to my head. Silas' eyes narrow, his breaths becoming stronger. Controlled. "Kill. Her."
