CHAPTER FOUR
It was 10.00am in Foundation Nursery/Primary school and short break time for the pupils.
It was a really sunny day. Pupils were scattered about. The girls were gossiping, the boys playing football. The shy and quiet ones observed from far distance.
Some were found in corners while some sat on the short shifty fence.
Others stayed back in class. The bookworms were found reading and tutoring few pupils. Some hastily finished their home work that was due later that day while some applied some final coatings to theirs.
Some pupils rushed out to buy some snacks as soon as they sighted the school's vendors arriving. They were often late for the 10am break which only lasted for fifteen minutes.
''Hey! Igbo girly girl. Come here.''
A primary six girl with a cool blue and black polka dot hijab nicely worn on her head and complimenting her uniform which was a not so tight plain red pinafore with tiny red dots on each sides of her long sleeve.
''Yes''. The Igbo girl in primary four answered with her head bowed down and looking frightened.
''What is that thing you are holding on so tight to eh?'' The primary six girl questioned.
''It's money''. She whispered.
''Speak up I couldn't hear that little whisper huh!'' The senior girl spoke impatiently.''It's my money''. She said a little louder still not wanting to look up at the tall dark senior with cute dimples on her cheeks.
''Quick! Hand them to me.'' She demanded. ''How much is it?'' She forcefully grabbed it as the poor girl hesitated.
''But, it's my breakfast and lunch money''. She cried.
''Shut your mouth up! Now tell me, how much is this cash?'' She asked.''Exactly the question to be asked but since the money is in your hand why don't you count it and tell me because I'm anxious to know too''. Uka approached the both of them.
''Well. Go on?'' Uka persisted.
''Uhhh hh. It's. Its UH.'' The girl was scared and embarrassed.''Yeah. I thought as much Zainab and you can't even spell 'money' or can you?'' Uka was raged not just because the girl wasn't able to count or spell the word 'money' but because of her terrible act towards the innocent girl.
''Prefect. I uh. See. Prefect Uka. I'm sorry. It's. It's just that..''
''No I don't think you're sorry''. Uka started. ''The day before yesterday, you pulled this same stunt on Ebele who is only a Primary One girl. Now give me one refining reason why I shouldn't rant you out to our Headmistress this second''. Uka was utterly cranked up.
''I won't do such again?'' The girl said fidgeting and looking noticeably contrite.
''Lies! You bloody liar! U assured me this the last time I caught you in this same wicked unethical act and it's not even the first time''.
The girl knelt down quickly and started to plead.''You deserve to be punished for this, Zainab. You need to know that there are consequences for man's every action''. Uka folded her arm and wouldn't budge.
