Jack's p.o.v.
Vanessa had trouble keeping up with me, and they were getting closer.
I said, " Vanessa! Push through it! We need to keep moving! "
Vanessa just glared at me and tried to run faster.
I sighed and felt a stab of guilt, I don't blame her for giving me this treatment. Afterall, she saw me give up on her. If I were in her shoes, I would've tried to stab me by now.
I shook my head clear of those thoughts, then stopped suddenly, causing Vanessa to bump into me.
She said, " Ow! Dammit Jack, why are we stopping?! They are right behind us! "
She then shut her mouth as she looked around me.
There was a huge group of the infected, just standing over the crest of the hill. They didn't seem to hear me and Vanessa, or anything at all. Their appareances were hard to make out, but they looked relatively new. A couple were missing limbs, while a few had only half of their face.
Suddenly, one of them turned towards me, and bolted straight at me.
I'm not gonna lie, I didn't grab it before it reached me, and kick its ass. I stood there frozen as Vanessa screamed.
It bit into my neck hard, and I yelled out in pain. I tried to shake it off, but all it did was help it rip off part of my neck.
I couldn't help but fall to the ground in shock, holding my neck as I bled profusely.
Vanessa ran to my side crying, and screamed my name. I could barely hear her, all I could hear was something eating something.
The little voice came back, and said, " Doesn't it sound wonderful? That chewing noise? Don't you want to try it? "
I groaned as I felt myself start to shake, and I couldn't control it...I was powerless.
For the first time in my life, I felt a new kind of fear, utter helplessness.
I wasn't even in control of my body, it seemed miles away.
I started to yell as whatever was controlling my body looked over at Vanessa.
Vanessa's p.o.v.
I was crying as I saw Jack start to shake.
" No, I thought, " he is immune! Why is he turning! "
It looked like he was in pain, and I was frozen. First, I lost my daddy when I was 7. A part of me, just gone. Second, I lost my momma, because she knew Jack was able to help protect me. But now...now Jack is gone.
My stomach sank as I relized that Jack was gone now, and all I did was treat him like I treated all of those stupid boys in elementary school.
I cried harder, hating myself, and the world. I cried for my daddy, my momma, and for Jack.
As I was catching my breath, Jack suddenly sat up, and looked at me.
I gasped, staring at his eyes, looking for a sign that Jack was still there; praying he was still there, able to help me.
But what I saw..it wasn't human. I started to cry again, knowing that I was as good as dead.
Jack got up, his eyes lifeless, and reached for me, his jaw starting to open.
I cried out, " Jack, please! Don't kill me! Please! "
Jack p.o.v.
As my uncontrollable body reached towards Vanessa, I heard her beg with me, " Jack, please! Don't kill me! Please! "
Suddenly, that anger I felt, seeing all of those people I knew get killed, and those helpless people die, people's sacrifices, sparked inside me.
I yelled in anger, and my body yelled in anger as well. I commanded my hand with all of my will power to punch the infected next to me, and surprisingly, it did.
My body punched its head clean off, blood going everywhere.
I gasped in pain as I blinked my eyes a couple of times, my pupils dialating to the sunlight.
I looked around, remembered what happened, and quickly looked towards Vanessa.
Vanessa looked at me scared, and said, " J-Jack...i-is it really you? "
I nodded my head, and said, " If it wasn't me, you'd be dead. Now, come on, we need to get out of here before they start to overwhelm us. "
Vanessa just nodded, looking at me with a mixture of happiness, fear, and admiration.
I decided to ask her about that later, and picked her up just as the infected behind us caught up.
I cursed under my breath as the infected in front of us turned towards us, and all of them, as if something controlled them, started to run straight at us.
Vanessa said, " Jack! We need to leave! NOW! "
I said, " I know Vanessa! "
I looked for a quick getaway, and saw an opening in the slow infected.
I gulped, and said, " Vanessa, do you trust me? "
Vanessa took no time to answer, she just yelled, " Yes Jack! I do trust you! "
I said, " Then hold on! "
I then took a deep breath, and ran towards the slow infected. It was about a 5 feet gap between the infected and a fence, and for some ungodly reason, I wanted to chance that. Well, I was always known to be a risk taker. Especially when I took Vanessa under my wing, because I had to look out of her now.
I winced as one of the infected scratched me, while another managed to bite my wrist. I ignored the pain and continued running forward.
I risked a quick check on Vanessa in my arms, and thankfully she was unhurt.
I refocused my attention on the fence, which was a few feet ahead of me. I gulped and stopped, saying, " Vanessa, climb the fence! "
She looked at me like I was crazy, until I said, " You said you trusted me! So do it! "
Vanessa gulped and nods, using me as leverage to reach the top of the fence. She pulled herself over, and landed on the ground. She winced as she almost twisted her ankle, and said, " Jack! Behind you! "
I whirled around and saw the infected had reached me. I cursed, and grabbed a semi-big rock next to me. I yelled, " Vanessa, you need to run and get some help! I can only hold out for so long! "
Vanessa said, " What?! Jack, I'm 13! How am I gonna get help?! "
I cursed again, knowing she was right. I decided to, against my better judgement, just climb the fence.
I threw the rock at the nearest infected, knocking them down, and quickly started to climb the fence. I got to the top fairly quickly, but yelped as an infected grabbed my foot. I tried to yank it out of their grip, it it was like they had an iron fist.
I yelled in anger and fear as it started to pull me down. Then, suddenly, it let go. I looked down and saw that Vanessa had found a stick, which she shoved through a hole in the fence, making the infected change its attention to her.
I used the opportunity to climb up, then jumped over the side of the fence. I groaned as I hit the ground, and said, " Thanks Vanessa "
She just nods, and hugged me tightly.
I groaned in pain, but hugged back just as tightly.
I looked over at those damn infected, and thought, " This has been a shitty day..."
