The rest of the day went as smooth as my compromising hair. Along with the next, or so I thought.
Josh was doing his usual thing in the garden this morning when suddenly a hot pink limo pulled right in front of the stone steps. It draws my attention too, as I was secretly paying attention to Mr. Handsome from the window. Then some flashy lady came out. She's probably 59 or older, judging by the small lines of wrinkles forming on her face. Fake eyelashes and neon pink lipstick compliments her face, not in a good way though. Her hair is definitely dyed - it's blonde, way too blonde to be natural. She wears a leopard skin printed dress that fits on her hips. Her glittered high heels are at least 12 cm. Those heels made holes everywhere as she walked across the lawn. Poor Josh, he had to fix the garden-again.
" Excuse me baby, can you tell me where Nathan is?" , She asked Josh.
Josh frozed at the question. He lost his words. Nathan- gramps is gone. Clearly Josh needed help. I knew I need to step up.
" Can I help you , Ma'am?"
" Oh, a very beautiful and...young girl. Natey didn't tell me anything about any hooker living in his house", she mumbled, half hissing, half eyeing me from head to toe.
" Excuse me?! I'm his grand daughter!". I tried hard not to punch her in the face.
Her eyes widened. " Nate has a grand daughter?"
" Yes he does, ma'am. Now why don't we talk inside? I'm sure there are some misunderstandings going on". Josh stepped up. I'm glad he did.
We're all inside the living room, waiting for anyone to start talking.
" Uhm, the name's Becky. I've just got back from Alabama. Ya' know, I'm running a business there and it gets busy these few months but I managed to come back for Nathan. Where is he?"
" He's dead", I answerd coldly. I feel bad for gramps but I had to say it. After all, who is she to treat me like this?
Her face dropped at my statement. Tears started falling down her cheeks, washing away her mascara. " oh, Nathan, my poor Nathan...". Okay Cass, you made an old lady cry. Now feel the guilt. That's all I could think of.
Josh offered her some tissue and thank god it made her stop crying.
" So, Becky. What's your relationship with Nathan?", I asked. I needed answers. They must be more than just acquintances.
" To be honest honey, I loved Nathan, for a long time now. But four months ago I had to go away so I lost contact with him, and now he's gone.. forever", she said looking down at her cup of tea as I gulped mine. Please tell me the feeling's not mutual. " And I didn't know that he was married.. and had children"
It's not easy for me to process everything that just happened, but I'm sure it's harder for her to figure everything out. My heart softens at the sight of this poor confused lady.
" I don't blame you. My grandma passed away after giving birth to my mom, so he never mentioned anything to anyone else about her"
Becky sobbed. " That's really sad". At the end of the day, she had told me anything I needed to know about gramps when I was not here.
" Look, honey. I'm sorry I've misjudged you. You're a very wonderful grand daughter and you deserve this" she took out a bunch of one hundred dollar bills from her expensive purse. " Consider this my last gift for Natey" and she got in her limo after we said goodbye.
" Wow, what a..." Josh said
" Rich lady?" I giggled as I finished his sentence. " It's your lucky day, Mr. Gardener, I'll treat you sundaes"
" I'll follow your lead, Boss", he reply with a smile on his face, huge one.
