_____________________________It was New Year's Eve nearing midnight. Ben was in the cafe of the ski lodge. He and his parents were on the last night of their vacation and spent it playing basketball and reading.
Ben was a high school junior at Auradon High and was the star basketball player. Even though he enjoys playing the sport, he loves reading a bit more. At his school, his team didn't know Ben read for fun, they only assumed he was studying.
"Are still reading that book of yours?" he looked up and saw Adam, his father. "You should be focusing on basketball,"
"Dad, you know reading helps me escape the pressure in real life,"
"Imagination won't get you anywhere. In the upcoming games, there will be college scouts. If you do well, you could get a scholarship. It can help you relieve the pressure in paying for college,"
"There's more to life than basketball and reading," Ben and Adam saw his mother, Belle. "And Ben, you've been reading and playing that sport this whole trip. Why don't you go to the kid's party downstairs?"
"I'm not a kid,"
"It's for young adults. Go on and get dressed in your best clothes,"
Ben sighed and closed his book. As he went to his room, he noticed a trio walking in front of him. Two men and a young woman. The women had purple hair and wore a matching leather jacket, which made her stand out.
For some reason, Ben felt like they were simply meant to be.

Mal and Jay were in the middle of stealing from one of the lodge members. They hid behind a corner, waiting for the right moment. Carlos and Evie were in the boy's room, making sure they weren't caught. The young boy hacked into the security systems on his computer, making sure they were alone.
"Are we good to go?" Mal asked Carlos through her walkie-talkie. Even though they all had phones, the team preferred walkie-talkies if they're communicating short distance.
"Not yet," he told her. "There some people coming his way,"
Carlos and Evie stared at the screen, showing the camera recording the halls. Evie noticed someone very familiar, their foster dad. She quickly reached for the walkie-talkie but couldn't find it.
"Looking for this," Both of them looked behind them, seeing their foster mom, Chloe Diavel. She was in a fancy dress, preparing to go to the New Year's party.
"Carlos, Evie. What's going on?" Jay asked.
"You're caught in your little mission," their foster parent said into the walkie-talkie. On Carlos's computer, Mal and Jay looked at each other. They turned to see their foster dad, Cameron Diavel.
After few minutes, the three walked through the door. Carlos and Evie sat on his bed. Jay sat on his bed while Mal sat on the floor. All four were waiting for their for their foster parents to speak.
"You four have spent the whole time stealing instead of having some fun,"
"We came to this ski lodge for some relaxation," Mrs. Diavel said to the four, in a disappointed tone.
"We didn't only do that, I sketched out a few new clothing ideas," Evie said, show them her new designs.
"I am working on making the walkie-talkies work in longer distances," Carlos told them, fiddling with the device on his bed. It sparked a bit, making Carlos jump.
"I practiced my basketball skills," Jay said after him spinning his basketball on his finger.
"And I am in the middle of finishing one of my sketches," Mal said, focused on her drawing. The picture was a dragon with horns, breathing out a blaze of fire surrounded by a wall of vines and thorns.
"Fine, you find these activities relaxing, but that doesn't excuse you all from committing crime,"
"We know you four don't want to be separated," Mr. Diavel explained to them. "No one else would take all four of you in if you keep all this up,"
All for looking up from what they were doing. They have been together since the first grade, and haven't been separated since then.
Chloe and Cameron took in all four of the teenagers about four years ago when they were entering primary school. Their previous families gave them up, like the other families they've been with. The couple knew the four were troublemakers, but they took the risk of their behavior. Until they're adopted by someone who accepts them, Chloe and Cameron took care of the four as best as they could.
Mrs. Diavel, after a small moment of silence, took out Carlos's and Jay's best clothes. In one hand, she held a black suit with a white shirt and matching pants along with a red loose tie for the foster child. In the other, she held a brown leather jacket with black sleeves and a white dress shirt along with black pants. "There's a young adult party in the lounge and you four are going,"
"We too old for that," Mal mumbled.
"You, Jay and Evie are turning 17 next year and Carlos is 15. Your still young adults. I set out your outfits on your beds. Now go on and get dressed,"
Mal groaned, while her best friend smiled. They walked into their room, seeing the outfits their foster parents bought them. For Evie was a blue and light green dress with black lace. For Mal was a light purple and blue dress with a white shirt.
As all four prepared for the New Year's Eve Party, Mal began to think about her mother and her friend's parents. All of them were in prison, having years left until they are released. They do visit them from time to time, only to be scolded at for not being able to be just as great as they were.
Mal, Evie Jay, and Carlos spent their whole lives in foster families, finding time to spend together in school, during the weekends, and school breaks. Almost everyone knew who they were in their small town, so the group of friends never had any other close bonds.
They were the descendants of criminals, and that all people would forever see them as.
