Hahahahahaha. Left you on quite a cliffhanger, didn't I? No matter. It hasn't been that long and no one reads this anyway. Jeez. I literally wrote this section last night and posted it today to give you a cliffhanger. I'm such a dork. Moving on.
I'm not really sure if it was high or low tide, but, at the time, it felt like mocker futhing Empire State Building height tide.
The current yanked me this way and that, barely resting to give me just enough time to burst my head above water and take a quick gulp of air before it pulled me back down again. My arms flailed around me in a useless attempt to gain some control.
The water calmed infinitesimally and I thought I could re-right my direction. I began to swim to where I assumed was upwards. Then, of course, the water started to churn again, catching me off guard. It pushed me in all directions until I slammed something hard and sharp.
The next few minutes were just a blur of on-again-off-again consciousness.
Um, let's see if I can remember this.
Something hard but softer wrapping around me. Pain. Black. Breaking the water's surface. Coughing. Gasping. Flailing. The hard thing loosening. Slipping. Falling back under. The hard thing rewrapping itself around me. Pain again. Black again. Air. Rock. Oh shoot shoot shoot shoot shoot. Being yanked to the side. More pain. Turning my head to the side. Face. Who...? Black again.
When I regained consciousness, I was laying on something soft. My left arm felt numb. A hand under my head. Muffled voices. Slowly, I unstuck my eyes and opened them.
"Oh, guys! Guys! Shut up! She's waking up!"
The voices silenced. I blinked up against the bright white light. Two heads hovered above me. I blinked some more. The heads focused on actual people, but I didn't feel like trying to recognize them. Instead, my eyes strayed to the slowly appearing stars.
"Kiara? Kiara? Are you okay?" Female. I knew that voice. There was much history with that voice. Instead of answering her question, I took a shaky deep. I did not take my eyes off the sky.
The hand underneath my head shifted forcing my head upwards. A violent cough overtook me. I tried to push myself into a sitting position, but a terrible pain shot up my arm. With a squeak, I fell back onto what I the realized then was sand.
I looked around. Besides the two people kneeling, I was surrounded by bare legs. I looked up a little more to see that the legs were connected to female bodies, interspersed by some male. The light was coming from their phones, but I had a feeling that more than a few of them were recording.
I felt embarrassed, like they were making fun of me for nearly drowning. I had no energy for dealing with my social anxiety.
"Oh, yeah. You banged your arm pretty bad when you nearly drowned," Asher told me. He was one of the people kneeling next to me. The other person was Erika Drew. I'm not gonna get into our history at all. He glared at something above my head.
I groggily turned my head to my left and nearly barfed all over myself. The entirety of my left arm was wrapped in someone's shirt, but I could see and smell little hints of blood. A little bit of the gash poked out from under the cloth. Ahh... ew. I can't think about that anymore. Asher and Erika helped me up.
"Jacob!" I heard a shrill voice explain. I turned. Jenny had turned on Jacob, glaring at him. "I can't believe you did something like that!" What? "And to me!" Oh. "You. Are. Dating. ME!" W O W
Jacob scratched his neck uncomfortably. "Er.. well. You know, it wasn't, like, official yet."
"WHAT?!" Jenny grabbed him by the ear.
