Prologue

"No right then left." I throw my hands up in frustration at Milo's idiotic response.

Milo is my best friend. No matter how annoying and idiotic he may be. He's biracial, half black and half white, he has shoulder length dreads, a narrow face and and a eyebrow and lip piercing. I guess most people would find him intimidating but he's not. I've known him for ten years he's practically a teddy bear. A big, muscly, tattooed, teddy bear of course.

Of course.

"I just did right then left. See, right then left." I demonstrate my movements slowly so that he understands. Silence. After a few seconds I turn and see Milo shaking his head furiously. I sigh.

"No, you're still doing it wrong, come on we've been at this for hours!"

I shake my head, frowning. "Exactly why can't we just leave?" I face the worn blue punching bag again.

What am I doing wrong?

Suddenly I feel a hand wrap around the wrist of my Everlast glove and the heat of what I assume is Milo's body. I mean, no one's here but us and anyways no else here is so gentle. Especially to me.

The Runt.

Milo twist my softly. "Like this." He whispers into my ear and I nod robotically.

My heart doesn't pound, there's no butterflies or any of that shit the girls in books claim to feel. That would be because there's no feelings. And some people would say, 'Well, what if he likes you?'. To that I would say no. He doesn't. He has a girlfriend that he loves. He hasn't said it but you can tell in the way he looks at her. The way he talks about her. Full of admiration and pride.

I am jealous though, boxing doesn't allow time for relationships. I shake my head and thrust my right fist forward and then my left as fast as I can. I drop my hands to the my sides as the gym fills with a satisfying 'poof' sound.

I sigh thinking this time was no different from the last and look up at the deteriorating metal ceiling. It may sound horrible and it looks horrible but it makes the best noise when it's raining. I turn and look at Milo and do a double take when I see him grinning. Slowly my own lips form into a half grin. Cautiously I say, "Did I do it right?"

Before I even finish my sentence Milo lifts me up in a huge bear hug but quickly realizes me when he realizes how sweaty I am. I roll my eyes.

That's what's happens when you box in probably the hottest gym in the world for five hours straight, I think bitterly.

I pick up my duffel bag too tired to even change out of my clothes. Sue me. I give Milo a bro hug before heading onto the sidewalk in front of the old, seemingly crumbling building. I take my first full breath since walking in the place at eight this morning and take a look around. Time to head off to a place I haven't considered home in years. And I have to walk since my motorcycle is in the shop.

Fuck my life.
