Whenever you went out,
You would hug the children.
You would kiss your wife.
You would tell your siblings to study hard.
Everyone held pain in their hearts.
Everyone was in constant sorrow.
Whenever you left,
The constant consolation for all of us-
Homecoming.
The year when the war was over,
The year all of us were incredibly excited for homecoming.
The year you forgot about homecoming.
Instead you came back with:
A shoebox at our gate,
A letter with the Queen's Seal,
A dog-tag with a 'C' for Catholic,
A damaged badge of yours.
I said I'll wait for you.
It was my vow to you.
I'll keep my word.
I'll wait for you at the Gates of Heaven.
I don't care how long it'll take.
I'll tell Saint Peter, I can't come in.
Without my best companion.
