I woke up with that feeling again. Instead of the usual sunlight peeking through my curtains and touching my vanity dresser, I was faced with a dim room. Behind my closed bedroom door, I couldn't make out the bickering of my younger brother and sister. Instead, I could hear my parents chatting away about some random issue at my dads job. For the second time in a year, I had a feeling my brother was up to no good.
Throwing the blanket off of me, I headed straight to the bathroom and cleaned myself up before facing my parents. To top things off, the clock read twelve in the afternoon. If one of us overslept past ten in the morning, my mom made sure to wake us up.
Downstairs, my dad was sitting in his recliner and watching the news while my mom did one of her daily crossword puzzles. I was used to this sight but not the silence of Lucas not communicating with Dustin, Mike, or Will through his gargantuan walk talkie.
"Where's Lucas?" I asked.
"Well, good morning to you darling. Did you sleep well?" My dad responded.
"I-I did. Why didn't you wake me up earlier?"
My mom quickly looked up at me with a soft smile. "Well, after your busy week in school, we figured you needed some rest. That was too much on you."
I was about to thank her until my dad spoke up. "Your brother is out with his friends, like always. He'll be back soon. What's wrong?"
"Uh, nothing." I shook my head lightly. Telling them about my strange feeling would put fear in their hearts and that was the last thing I ever wanted to do. "Nothing. I just woke up late. Didn't hear him and Erica arguing. As usual."
"Don't worry, they got that out of the way while you were asleep. Like your dad said, he'll be back soon." Mom reassured me.
But soon didn't come fast enough. By three in the afternoon, I was glaring out my bedroom window awaiting Lucas' return. By five, the sun was setting and I was debating on asking my parents once again when my brother would return. By seven, I had skipped out on dinner and dashed out the front door looking for him.
Which lead me to where I currently was: roaming the empty and dark streets of Hawkins calling out for my brother at a medium volume. Some would tell me that I should be accomplishing this frightening task in a car but that's the thing; I didn't have a license yet. So here I was in the chilly night with my arms wrapped around my torso for warmth, searching for my idiotic but adventurous little brother.
"Fuck my life." I groaned, throwing my head back in annoyance.
I refused to call any of his friends parents as I assumed they wouldn't be of any help. If my parents were cool with Lucas being out this late, then so would the others parents. Then they would tell me to head back inside, eat dinner, and go to bed. But I couldn't do that.
After last years events, I kept a tight hold on my younger brother. Erica not so much because she hardly ever left the house. No one else except for myself knew about Eleven and while my brother was trying to help her out, it still bothered me to this day on why he would risk his life by fighting some alien like creature. Not only that but he went missing for a few days last year, angering me more than my parents. Eventually, he was back in our house, unharmed and feeling more relieved than he was a couple of weeks prior.
Up the street where the Wheelers lived, I could make out the sound of loud rock music playing. As my stomach hurled at the familiar sound, my eyes rolled up to my lids. Coming around the the corner in his blue Camaro was none other than Billy Hargrove, the new King of Hawkins High and a complete asshole. As usual, the dude sped right by me in his sports car and luckily for him, I was on the sidewalk.
I continued on with my frustrating journey, shaking my head at the annoying newcomer's choice of transportation. You would think he'd know that some people were sleeping peacefully but that was Billy; he could two shits if you begged for sleep and while he lived for the hardcore sounds.
On the front of a car parked on the side of the road, I took note of the glowing red. As I walked closer to it, the color seemed to be getting brighter and it was then that I realized someone was backing up. And the only moving vehicle I had passed was Billy's. Before I could get any closer to the car, the Camaro parked a few feet in front of me with his bright lights nearly blinding me. I brought my hand up to rest above my eyes as I continued walking.
However, I couldn't continue because Billy stopped me. "Well, well, well. I did not expect to see you out here Sinclair. It's a bit past your bed time, don't you think?" Even without me facing him, I could tell he was wearing that irritating smirk.
"Go away Hargrove. I'm busy." I responded in a short tone as I continued on.
By now, he had stopped the car and seconds after my response, I was hearing his car door open. "Seriously, what're you doin' out here? Girls like you should be inside, not out here."
I stopped in my tracks and spun on my heels to face him. "What is that supposed to mean?"
"Only stating the obvious Sweetie. Innocent girls like you get kidnapped around this time of the night."
Now it was my turn to return his smug look. "Wow."
"What?" he narrowed his eyes at me. "Why're you looking at me like that?"
"Oh nothing. It's just that you come from such a big place. California is it? Yet, you have the nerve to tell me that I could be abducted in a place like Hawkins. Hargrove, you haven't seen the shit that goes down here." I stated. "Only stating the obvious Sweetie."
"So you're saying that my little shit of a step sister is still here?" he glared. "Because as of right now, she's not in her room and if I don't find her by the end of tonight, I'm dead meat."
I caught on to the slight waver in his voice. He was trying to sound tough, as if he didn't care about the consequences ahead if he came up empty handed. But something told me that deep down, he was afraid.
"She's still in Hawkins. Probably out here somewhere with my brother. If it makes you feel better, I'm looking for his dumbass too."
"You tried calling any of his friends?"
A cool breeze blew by us, sending shivers up my exposed arms. Really, I was shaking from the fact of not contacting anybody. I knew what Lucas was up to but I didn't want the others to know about. If my brother trusted me, he didn't want any other, older soul knowing about his whereabouts. Not even Billy if Max was with them at the moment.
"No. I didn't." I finally answered.
For a minute, he stared at me intensely. It was as if he were trying to understand what I was thinking. Why I hadn't called anybody.
"Hop in." he demanded.
"What?"
"Hop in. I just came from the Wheelers and Mrs.Wheeler believes they're at Beyers house."
Of course he would be at Will's place. The kid had been going through so much shit lately and I wouldn't be surprised if I showed up to find my brother there trying to make him feel better. If that was the case, I would stand by his side until he was sure his best friend was okay.
I huffed loudly, giving into Billy's command and made my way to the passenger side of the car. As soon as I closed the door, I was trapped in a small compartment full of smoke and loud music blasting from his stereo.
Perfect. The ride would go smoothly and I wouldn't have to talk to him.
