This is a collection of those beautiful thoughts that we all had as kids growing up. Yes I still remember them like yesterday. We all had them. There were things we believed as kids which later turned out to be very untrue.

I had so many of these silly thoughts and ideas in my head while growing up in West Africa and now looking back; I can not help but laugh at my folly.

At the time I was growing up with other kids my age, I thought there were so correct. If only I knew. Now I laugh as I remember yesterday. Read this collection of silly thoughtsthat I and people of my generation had and I assure you that you will be greatly thrilled. It was such a fun remembering and writing them. I know it will even be a bigger fun for you reading this. Many of the myths were what I knew while young and some from other people who I interviewed for this project.

Before you go ahead to read the myths, I just want us to remember the source of these beliefs. Some came from our fathers, mothers, Aunties, Uncles, Neighbors, people much older than us, people that we believe in, people we thought will never tell us lies. But alas it turned out they were not telling us the truth.

Also some came from our innocent wild minds as kids. Some we passed amongst ourselves as kids. Some I do not know or remember where it came from. Some came from watching those cartoons. Oh how I laugh now. I hope you remember some of the myths you had too as a kid.

Let’s look at some of those myths below.

About Santa Claus.

Hahahaha, I really believed in Santa Claus or Father Christmas as he is called in some countries. I was almost (gulp) an adult when I realized there was no such thing.

Many kids think he comes from Heaven every Christmas period. I always thought that Father Christmas or Santa Claus came from New Zealand, while another kid thought Santa came from Iceland. You kidding me? Another kid that I know thought he was from Ireland.  This was a source of many arguments between us as kids.

I use to think a lot about Santa and how he was going to drop my own gifts in our home since we did not have a chimney in our house. Chimney is that tall big opening that they put in Kitchens so that smoke could escape through it from the kitchen. We were told that Santa always dropped gifts for children through the chimney at night.

I always troubled my Dad about adding a chimney to the roof of our kitchen so that Santa could drop me my Christmas gifts. I would also ask Dad to buy me a Christmas tree too. One Christmas when he could no longer bear it, Dad bought a Christmas tree but he failed to do anything about chimney. I thought because he failed to add the chimney that was why Santa never left me a gift.

In my early years in primary school, my elder brother always felt Santa came from Rome because our school was a catholic school. But he began to have doubts about Santa’s identity when Santa would always come in our Headmaster’s car (Santa would be the one driving) and each time Santa was around, our Headmaster was never there. LOL.

About Babies.

My mum once told me that mothers vomited the pregnancy after 9 months... there you have the baby and I believed this until I got to high school. Poor me.
