"So... meeting with your dad went a lot smoother than it did the first time."
"Yeah. I'm just glad you're comfortable with my parents now."
"Yeah", I breathe. "I think I can get along with your whole family as a matter of fact."
"That's good, baby". Chase took my hand and kissed my knuckles. My face flushed and I didn't know what to say but to smile at him.
"What are you doing next weekend?" His mother curiously asking.
"Hm, I don't know. What are we doing next weekend, Chase?" I raised my eyebrows at him.
"I don't know. You didn't tell me what you wanted to do, Ashley." Chase pointed back.
"I'm only turning a year older so I don't know what I want to do, Chase." I pointed it right back at him.
"Well you better figure it out."
"Oh sure. I do all the hard work." I walked away as I saw Savannah cross paths with me and began to have our own girl talk. Finally someone around my age to talk to.
Chase giggles. "What do you mean she has to figure it out?" His mother still confused.
"Son, you better tell us what you got going underneath your sleeve." His father wants answers.
"It's her birthday next weekend. Yeah, I just found out today, too. I don't know what to do for her."
The room was all quiet. Chase has to come up with a plan. "I know", he started to protest. "I can have her come home to a big birthday surprise waiting for her but she never told me how she wanted to spend her day."
"Well you better go ask her." His father demanded.
"Ashley!" Chase calls
I come down the stairs, finding Chase still sitting with his parents out in the living room.
"Yeah?" I questioned him.
"Do you know what you want to do for your birthday?"
I kept quiet. I was thinking about and I'm still indecisive of what I want to do for my birthday. "I don't know, babe. As I get older, it's hard to just find something to do."
"Hasn't there been anything you wanted to do that you weren't able to do?" He questions may suggestions he can ask me.
"Hmm, I don't know." I shrugged my shoulders. "Not really."
"What about hanging out with Sam? Your coworker?"
"She's backpacking across Europe with her family."
"Okay then." He slowly says, running out of ideas for him to come up with.
"Hey, it's only Saturday. Maybe by Tuesday or Wednesday I may or may not have an idea and we can talk about it then."
"Sounds like a good idea to me." Julie admits.
"See, Chase. It's a good idea you have her as your girlfriend because she's smart and you're dumb." Todd says and he jokes about him being dumb so Chase knows the deal.
Chase laughs hard. "Preach it", Savannah says as she makes her way down the stairs and joining the rest of the family. "There you are, Ashley. I've been waiting for you to come back upstairs and talk about new ideas with you."
"Oh, I'm sorry it took long. You know Chase is. Slowly everybody down." Savannah and I laughed together.
"That's not true at all." Chase defends himself.
"Um, yes it is." Savanah argues back. "Come on Ashley. I love your ideas. I think it will suit my clothing line. And I had ideas, too that will go great if we corporate them." Savannah and I talk, the conversation becomes distant as we go back upstairs to her room.
"I think you should talk to my father and ask him if you could work with me instead of that greasy pizza place. It will do you good for the future and it will give you a chance to do what you love to do especially since you worked hard in school to get that degree."
"Really? You think I can have a way to join the fashion industry?" I'm praying for a better job.
"Yeah! And I'll even talk to my daddy about it. It would be a good way for us to get to know you more and plus you can join my team if you would like."
"That would be so amazing! Thank you Savannah for giving me this opportunity. I promise I won't let you down!" I'm so excited about this but I kept it cool as a cucumber on the outside:
"You're welcome. Let's go back downstairs. I'm sure Chase is lonely down there."
"Maybe he could try to think when he's alone", I made a joke.
"Maybe", Savannah agreed with me.
We both went down the stairs a regroup with the family. Chase stands up and wraps his one arm behind my back, bringing me closer to his side and his hand lands on my hip. "It was great seeing you, guys, and thank you, Ashely for forgiving me and talking to me. I think you're the perfect girlfriend for Chase." Todd sincerely apologizes.
"You're welcome. I'm just glad we have cleared the air now and can enjoy each other's company one day soon."
"Yes and you are welcome over here anytime with it without Chase." I smiled back at him, appreciating the thought. Chase and I said our goodbyes and exited the house with him holding my hand. We got in the car and I decided to tell Chase the good news his sister gave me.
"So your sister offered me an exciting deal of a lifetime but I just hope you won't be mad at me for it."
The traffic light turned from yellow to red and Chase put his foot on the break. He turns his face and his eyes look so cloudy a bit. "Why would I be mad at you?"
"Remember when we went out to dinner for our first date and I told you I went to school back at my hometown? While you were talking to your parents about whatever it was that you guys were talking about, Savannah and I were getting to know each other. And it was such a great thing to feel like I have a "sister", babe. Or a new friend, too, I should say. She told me about her dream of becoming a fashion designer and having her own line so she showed me drafts of the clothing she wants to put together and incorporated my ideas, too, and what I suggested and she thought that they were amazing ideas that she asked me if I would like to join her team."
During the ride back home and while I was blabbering about my long story as the traffic light turned green and he continued to drive, he got a little quiet. Maybe he's speechless just as much as I was when I first heard about this new journey I might embark on.
"Please say something, baby." I pleaded. My voice started to crack and I spoke so softly because I didn't want him being mad at me.
We went back to his house and since it's late, I'll just borrow his clothes this time and sleep with them. Another night spent at his condo. I don't mind it at all! He got himself situated for bed, patting on the mattress so I could sit next to him.
"Listen", he begins. "I know that you haven't made friends before and that your best friend is all the way on the other side of the world. I think it's great that you want to be closer to my family. I believe if this is what you want to do, then, I will support you. Just don't have my sister steal you away from me."
"Really?" I sniffles, wiping the tears off from my face. "You really mean that? You're not mad at me?"
"No", he voice coos.
I hugged him and so much force went against him that we both crashed down together on the bed. From there, the night was peaceful and perfect sleeping next to his warm body again.
