She began to talk to me even more after that. It felt as if she was comfortable around me now. After that time we spent alone… When she had finished talking to Otonashi, she came over to me. “Yuri?” “Yes, what’s up Kanade?” “I, erm.” She paused. “I’m sorry Yuri!” she yelled, bursting into tears. I was taken aback so I went over to her. She looked up suddenly, gazing deeply into my eyes. Her amber eyes were so strikingly beautiful… Before I knew what we were doing, she lifted herself up and embraced me. Her warm hands wrapping around my body like silk around a freshly wrapped present. “I’m sorry for all of the times that I’ve tried to kill you and your friends… I’m so sorry and…” She was quiet for a moment, as if debating how to say her next sentence. “I love you too… Yurippe…” Her mouth covered mine and she closed her eyes. Her body began to collapse and I struggled to ensure that she didn’t hurt herself when we fell to the floor. “Are you ok, Kanade?” I asked in between breaths. “Yes Yuri. I’ve decided. I want to be with you forever. It doesn’t matter who you were in your past life or what happened to you.” We lay on the floor, our bodies entangled as she whispered in my ear again. “Yurippe… I love you…” I held her head gently and kissed her again. Over the speakers, we could hear Iwasawa singing. “Let’s make a life somewhere. A place where no one can bother us or think badly of us. A place where we can be ourselves. A place to forget all of our worries and our past. A place where we can live happily and peacefully” I suggested. She nodded at me and she pressed her lips even harder against mine. Why am I crying? Could this be… happiness? But I thought that this feeling was just a myth in the afterlife. Is this really what I’m experiencing? Otonashi and the others looked on in amazement. This was their first time witnessing a disappearance. Just as Iwasawa finished singing, a small clang could be heard. From where Yuri and Kanade had been laying, a golden brooch had fallen to the floor; bearing the SSS logo. On the back was engraved: If you find this brooch, it means that I have found peace with myself in some way. I have passed on from the afterlife. The rest of you that remain there, please look after the SSS. Make sure that everyone passes on safely. After all, we were sent here to pass on in the proper way with no regrets from our past lives. I assure you. The world after the afterlife is a better place than anywhere else in the world… Please don’t leave us waiting for you…
