“Where are you?!” Jane yelled over the phone.

“I’m coming, jeez, stop freaking out.” I was half-walking, half-running toward the booth. My head was pulsating and my mind was spinning. Now was the perfect time to promise myself I’m never going to drink again.

“Oh, I see you” she said and hung up.

I ran straight into the shop just in time to see her putting her skates on. They made her long legs look even longer and I felt a stab of jealous creeping over me. Her golden hair was shining on the sun. She really was beautiful.

“I’m here, you can go now.” I said, breathing hard. My lungs were a mess.

“Great. ‘Cause I need to go and buy Loren a birthday gift. He said he doesn’t want anything but I want it to be special.”

“That’s so sweet.” Too bad I couldn’t hide the sarcasm in my voice.

She set off as usual, with dumb expression on her face. I think that she’d realized that I don’t like her very much. And honestly, I don’t know why is that way. I read one time that they are persons that are literally sucking the energy out of you. I think Jane is one of them.

I changed the CD and put on some old rock on. Yeah, it wasn’t the best thing to do in an ice-cream booth in the middle of the summer, but I didn’t really care.

Two hours later, I was on that same place, sitting on a wooden chair with my big bug-like glasses, trying to catch some sleep. The costumers were non-existent and I knew nobody will try and steal two dollars I earned today.

But, it was the sun that wouldn’t let me sleep.

It was so hot.

So, as any intelligent person would, I imagined I was a penguin.

On the North Pole.

And it was so cold there.

Yeah, placebo-effect. Just as I was wondering why Penguin Marchelo, A.K.A me, can fly, when no other penguin in our community (clan?) is capable of doing that, somebody took off my glasses.

“Wha-“

“Does your boss ever come here and check up on you?”

I made a face. “Of course no, Loren. Do you think I would be sleeping if he was?”

Loren smirked and sat on the floor. I was watching him quietly while he opened the refrigerator doors and put his head in.

I waited for him to pull it out.

And waited.

And waited.

“Um, Loren, I don’t want to sound slow or stupid, but I really don’t understand what are you doing.”

“Chilling.” His voice was muffled.

“I can see that.” I rolled my eyes. “But if you came here looking for Jane, she left to buy you a surprise birthday present.” I leaned back in my chair.

His head was still in there.

“Thank you for making it unsurprised. And, by the way, I came here looking for you.”

“Mhm. And why is that?”

“I believe you promised me something yesterday.” He finally pulled his black head out and looked at me.

Actually, stared at me.

On the mention of yesterday’s events, I blushed a little. After leaving Loren, I met up with Drake. On we did a lot of naughty things on his back seat.

Was it weird that I really did felt a little dirty after that? I mean, that’s what I wanted all along, right?

“Really? I can’t remember doing such a thing.”

Loren put a hand on my thigh and squeezed it softly. It brought that feeling deep in my stomach, the one I felt usually only when I was with Drake. My pulse quickened.

He still didn’t let go.

My legs were bare; I wore my favorite grey skirt, and a white top, and black Converse. My daily looks consisted of, literally, 50 shades of grey. I didn’t do colors.

Loren started slowly rubbing my skin, up and down. My eyes were still glued to his green ones.

And then he bit his lower lips.

I don’t know how fast exactly my heart was pumping, but I am sure I had a small heart attack when somebody cleared their throat.

My head snapped and I jumped as soon as I saw I had a customer.

As I served her a vanilla and coconut ice-cream with caramel topic, a woman in her mid 50’s shoot me a disproving look. When she paid me, turning around, she added;

“Tell your boyfriend to adjust his pants.”

Oh, sweet penguin.

I turned around and raised an eyebrow. Loren was sitting still, one arm over his, khm, area while wearing that stupid smirk of his.

“You heard the woman, clean yourself up.”

“It's nothing to be ashamed of.”

“Idiot.” I sat back on my chair. He laughed and ruffled my hair. It was a nice, friendly gesture, but it made my heart swell and a smile to appear on my lips. I leaned my head onto his shoulder and he continued moving his fingers through my dark hair.

“She thought I was your boyfriend.” He said after a while.

I laughed but I did felt a stab of something. I could only describe it as remorse. It was like, I knew we couldn’t be together and that it will never happen, I knew that I love Drake, but I was still glad that somebody thought that we were a nice couple. Or a dirty couple. But a couple, nonetheless.

“You have a nice girlfriend. No need for another one.”

“Ah, Jane is…” He stopped, searching for words. “Jane is something. But, you know, two years of relationship have their effects on people. People change.”

I wouldn’t know.

That’s the sad part. My only relationship at the moment was acting as a mistress.

But I nodded anyway.

“So, will you give me something to lick or not?”

I rolled my eyes and got up. I made him a big sundae with a strawberry on top. Yeah, I didn’t have cherries. Well, a girl needs to improvise.

We sat there, talking, laughing, for gods know how long, but then Jane called him and he said he needed to talk to her.

And left me all alone.

Just like everybody else did.

That was all that everybody was doing to me lately.

Leaving me.
