december 13th
As the cloudy remembrance of where I was filled my mind, I outstretched my arms and groaned at the open blinds in my apartment. Beside my bed, was one wide open window that overlooked the city and its people.
I turned over in my bed to look at the ticking clock on the wall, that read seven twenty-four. I slowly peeled myself out of the white bed sheets, and slipped my feet into two cozy purple slippers that warmed up my toes before they had to hit the cold timber floor. I traced my steps over to the kitchen of my apartment. Although, I couldn't really class it as a kitchen as my apartment was just one giant room on the border of an apartment block.
A rather loud bang on the door interrupted me on my way to the kettle to get some morning warmth into my system. I turned around and walked back to the front door, hugging my body closer to warm my body up from the dressing gown draped over my shoulders.
I swung open the metal door, and smiled – greeted with my two best friends in the entire city. Grace and Lola were two of the best chicks that a girl could ever ask for in such a big city like New York.
They both invited themselves in - as they always did – and threw themselves onto my tanned cotton couch where I typically spent my nights watching ABC re-runs.
"Rise and shine Chloe, wake up! It's December 13th!" Lola smiled, kicking her converse off and pulling her knees into her chest on the couch. Her hand grabbed the remote and flicked the television on, where it turned to the last channel I was on, which was Disney, late last night.
December 13th was famously the twelve day countdown to Christmas, but not many people knew that the countdown is supposed to begin after Christmas.
I rolled my eyes at her sly comment, and joined the two of them on the couch. The background was echoed by Home Alone on the television.
Over a year ago I left high school in Pennsylvania to move to New York to get a new change of horizons, only I hadn't done much in my time. I'd promised my parents that I would make something of my life, but so far two thousand and seventeen was nearly over, and I was just another washed up eighteen year old with dreams of moving to New York.
I looked to my two best friends beside me, who had both achieved so much in their short time in the city. Grace, was twenty two, and she was studying dramatic arts at Julliard. I met her mid- June when we were both grabbing a Cappuccino from the same coffee van in the street. Lola on the other hand, was different. I met Lola when I got a job alongside her, when she coincidentally became my best friend. She was in her first year of musical theatre at Julliard as well, but Lola was only nineteen. Both girls beside me had so much talent, and me? Well I was just Chloe Stewart, eighteen, and untalented.
I had always dreamed of moving to the big apple and finding a new hobby, but the only thing I ever wanted to do was write, and I found myself thinking up ideas everyday for new writing gimmicks, but I could never put pen to paper.
All three of us had part time jobs at the local country club out of the city, but on the off season in winter we didn't get any work – so we were forced to fend for ourselves, which was quite hard. The other girls had quite rich families in Manhattan, but I was forced to work at the local Dairy Queen whenever I had a spare moment or two.
