"Are you out of your damn mind, Winhilda?"
Syd usually wasn't up much for swearing. It was one of the rare ocasions when she lost her temper enough. There were also quite few things that could anger her. Apparently I was one of them.
"You tell me. I'm not so sure anymore" I mumbled sarcastically though she could perfectly hear it with her vampire abilities.
We were sitting at the bar at Pablo's, a pub we were frequent at, open for every kind of living creatures. I even saw some gnomes sitting at a table in a corner eating garlic bread.
Pablo's had wonderful Italian pasta and steaked meat. I was in love with the food, though now Syd's angry energy attacking my aura didn't help with my appetite.
She was wearing black skinthight leather jeans with a highneck black sweater. Her short pixie style white blonde hair freely embracing her face. Being furious she just looked so vampire.
I just told her about the anonym invitation I recieved three days ago to the Psychic, a popular night club among the Sum.
"That place is not for us" Syd shook her head. "You don't even know who sent the letter, or why."
I knew she had me there, but I was going to go anyway. I never really had a sense of danger and the club seemed relatively okay to me. And my life was so dull, I needed some excitement and was curious about the reasons they invited me.
"Why don't you come with me, if you're so concerned?" I asked between two bites of grilled meat.
I saw she considered it. With a vampire on my side it wouldn't be that risky. Vamps were fam. Especially my bestie. She got the power.
"I didn't recieve an invitation" mused my blonde friend.
"Have that ever been an obstacle?" I smirked.
She sighed "Okay, you have a point, but I still think, it's a horrible idea."
Syd was always more reserved and more careful than me. When other vampies enjoyed all the glam and superiority, she hated to stand out even a little. Though I couldn't complain sometimes she tended to be a little bit overprotective. This I voiced as well.
"That place is a viper's nest. Full of underworld schemings. You're not going there alone."
And that was end of discussion.
I hadn't yet told her about the animal like creature that jumped out of our garden on the same day the Psychic thing happened. I wasn't going to anyway.
The next morning I checked every energy field and protection around the house, just to find everything in order. So I didn't know how that thing got into the garden when it should have been impossible. I also considered that I was just hallucinating the whole thing, but my jeans got tore in a little area by something that looked like sharp claws.
Syd would have just overreacted it anyway, so I decided to remain silent about it. But that didn't mean I wasn't looking out more for suspicious activity around the neighbourhood. I even built an other stone circle in the backgarden.
Apparently I dozed off because Syd tapped my shoulder. "And now you don't even listen to me."
I sighed "Sorry, what were you saying?"
"Oh nothing really, just about your mom calling me yesterday asking abot you."
I frowned "Just ignore her."
"Yeah, like I can do that. She's stubborn. Told me, she couldn't reach you any way."
It must have been about me not calling her for a week. I was busy. Really. I had some new works like cleaning a library from homeless pixies and stuff. I was busy. Though not my dream job.
Now Syd was talking about why I should contact my family more often. I didn't want to argue, so I was just nodding not quite listening. I was rather observing the pub.
The waiters were all human, and most of the costumers as well. But they offered a wide range of food for the Sum. Like the glass of Bloody Mary Syd was drinking. With less tomato and more blood in it.
The bar we were sitting at was in the front surrounded by tables all over and boxes next to the walls. Everything was red and white checked and oak wood. It would have been disgusting but strangly it was rather appealing. People were loudly chatting and laughing. I really liked this place.
An ad in the tv above the door got my attention. I already saw it a dozen times. It was about E and W Co. (Easton and Weller Corporations), one of New Yorks leading company, the only one in which the majority of the shareholders were Magicals. The owner of the company, the richest among the Sum was a misterious man noone really knew about.
I was wondering who he could be when I felt a sudden pain in my neck. It stang like a mosquito bite. Syd was still blabbering but when I cried out she stopped. "What is it?"
"I don't know, it just suddenly..." I touched the area, but didn't expect my fingers to brush over anything. Than I felt something soft and than sharp teeth biting on my pinkie.
"Au, whadde hell!" I closed my fingers around the screaming thing and looked at the little blue pixie in my hand.
"Let me go, you insufferable, ugly witch or I bite your fucking fingers off one by one!"
Well, it wasn't in a good mood. But then we were two.
