•Chapter 9•
•Grace's POV•
"And right here is where we usually stock up most of the food," David smiled as he opened the door to a small room. I took a step through the doorway into the dim area. It had shelves pushed against the walls stacked with cans and cardboard boxes. I glanced around the room before stepping back into the hallway.
"So do you like it here? It's probably one of the safest places you've been to and now you're with your own kind," David asked giving me a small smile as he started to walk forward continuing the tour. He seemed warmer than most of the monsters I was pretending to be, even though he lashed Daryl.
"Yeah. Daryl has had his thoughts about leaving, but I told him it was for the best to stay," I returned his facial expression. David lightly chuckled, but not how he did before he lashed Daryl. It was a pleasing and soft one that reminded me of happiness.
We walked down the tan, cinder block hallways to the next stop. He halted at another door and pushed it open. I stepped in to see a larger room lit by candles on shelves in the middle. Personal belongings scattered the floor with names alongside them. Black paint was splattered against the walls."We first. Always," I repeated the words written on the stone walls. So, this was the room Merle talked about.
"It's our oath. We live by it. We used to only kill the weaker ones, but food is runnin' short, Grace. We need all we can get," he sighed as he scratched the back of his head. I trudged closer to the belongings. "It's our only way to honor them. Did you do that before.... you know," David asked coming on the side of me. "No, we just got it over with. We didn't want to think about it. We didn't even know them," I sighed trying to conjure up some lie.
The Dixons and I would have to make up a story about our past so when we talk to others there wouldn't be twenty stories floating around Terminus. I don't know where we would find Merle and if he'd even cooperate with the situation.
"C'mon. Your patient is probably waiting for ya," David weakly smiled as he lead me out of the room with his hand pressed against my back. We passed through the exit and David closed the door behind us.
"I hope it's not too much to ask, but can I get my own room. Being stuck with those two kinda gets to your head," I shrugged my shoulders as I walked alongside David. His eyebrows rose, but his expression softened and a smile spread across his face. "Sure. One girl died last week from an infection so you can have her room. We didn't take any of her stuff so help yourself to whatever you like. You want me to take you there now?" David answered.
I nodded my head lightly and followed him to wherever the room was. I hoped it wasn't far from Daryl's room so I could sneak in just in case.
He led me to the same hallway that Merle's room was in. We passed up the door that Daryl was behind and took about ten steps before reaching our destination. David opened the door for me like all the other times this morning.
"This is it. I hope you like it," David sighed before he left me to look around. The bedroom looked like Merle's except it had more belongings in it. The two beds that were separated in the other room were pushed together here to make a bigger bed in the middle. I checked the dresser in the far corner of the room and found clothing. I yanked out a t-shirt that seemed it would fit me.
For the first time ever someone's death benefitted me. Terminus has given me more than living alone did, even though they would kill me if they found out I wasn't one of them.
I smirked at the blue shirt I held in front of me. I glanced to me right and saw a slightly ajar door. I gently put the shirt back where I found it and stepped closer to my new discovery. I placed my fingertips on the off white entrance and pushed it lightly.
