•Chapter 10•
•Daryl's POV•
The thought of Grace messing around with a cannibal stuck in my mind. She was so against them and now she's friends with one of them. On top of that, it's the one that lashed me.
Maybe Merle was lying. Maybe Grace was telling the truth and she only took the offer to find a way to get out. I only hope she was just using him to get information. I trust her and losing that is unbearable.
It was the light of the fifth day in Hell. I was starving even though they had plentiful food. Merle was as healthy as ever since he didn't care what he put in his mouth.
I was walking down the hallways trying to find something to do. If I make a wrong turn or move, I could end up on that post again.
My eyes scanned the area around me. It was mostly bedrooms I passed, but sometimes I would see an open area behind double doors. I was tired of the suffocating bedroom so I marched outside.
The autumn breeze was starting to settle around Georgia. It's only been a few months since the outbreak. I was guessing it was about October since a few weeks ago the weather cooled down.
I faced the fences near where we found Mary when Grace and I first got here. I turned my head to my right to see a group of survivors sitting at picnic tabes either eating or fiddling with their belongings. Something then caught my eye. Grace sat across from the bastard I punched. They both had smiles on their faces as they laughed and joked.
Anger rose from deep inside me. She's such a hypocrite. I marched right up to her and grasped her arm. I yanked her off the bench she sat on. "Daryl, what the hell?" she said in disgust trying to get out of my grasp. I didn't look at her as I hauled her towards the fence.
"Let me go, Daryl,"she snarled pulling away from me. I stopped once we were out of ear's reach and made her face me. I still held onto her left arm so she wouldn't slip away while I made my rant.
"Don't what the hell me! You hate these pieces of shit and now you're fucking around with one!" I snapped. She rose her eyebrows at me and a sly smirk spread across her face.
"Have you ever heard of acting?" she pushed away from me making me loose my grip on her,"You need to get your shit together." I bit my tongue before I could lash out on her and make the situation worse.
"Well, I thought you wanted to get outta here. You had more than enough chances to leave," I snarled. She was getting on my nerves. Will she ever make up her mind?
"I'm trying to figure it out. I don't wanna sneak outta here so when they realize in gone that they'll come looking for me! I'm planning on going on a run and ditch them then," she snapped stomping her foot.
I let out a heavy sigh as I passed my hand over my face,"Fine, I'll come with you." Her face was then painted with the expression of surprise. "What? No! I thought you wanted to stay here with your brother," she sighed.
"He can come too. I want to get outta here as bad as you do," I explained. I wasn't in the mood for an argument, but I wasn't going to stand down.
"Hell no! I'm not going anywhere with that bastard. He can stay here and you too," she snarled crossing her arms. "I can come if I wanna. You can't tell me no. They're probably gonna send me with ya anyway," I said taking a step closer to her. The expression of defeat was written on her face.
She then turned on her heels and marched back to the cannibal she was talking to before. She bent over the bench across from him and rested her palms on the top. Her lips were moving, but I couldn't understand her.
I walked up to them to see what she was talking about. "We just need a car and some weapons. Please, David, I need to get out of here for a little," she pleaded to him. We? I thought she didn't want me to come. "Grace, I can't risk it. What if you don't come back? That's just a loss of supplies. We only send out the experienced ones," he defended his position.
"We're experienced. We've been living out there for months. We can handle ourselves. We know some places that haven't been picked out," Grace sighed as she stood up. David looked around him before letting out a heavy breath,"Fine, but don't get lost, please. I'll give y'all a map and some supplies."
Grace gave him a victorious smile and turned to me. She rose her eyebrows,"I'm surprised you haven't gotten ready yet." With that comment she started to walk in the opposite direction of me.
•Two Hours Later•
•Grace's POV•
After we got everything ready, we set out on the run. David was still hesitant about letting us go. Merle decided not to come. He thought that we'd be dead in the first few days.
I let Daryl drive the SUV we were in. The car ride was silent until I piped up,"Will they come looking for us?" Daryl let out a heavy sigh as he stared at the road. "We'll have to gather some food in case they do. If we don't have a good bit, they're gonna think that we just stole some of they're supplies," he said as he rose his left hand to his mouth and propped his elbow on the driver door.
We were about five minutes out of Terminus as we followed the tracks. "We can just get outta the state. Once they give up the search, we should be home free," I proposed.
"Yeah, but I still don't feel comfortable with leaving Merle behind like that."
My eyebrows rose at his opinion,"It was his choice, Daryl. He wants to live like that so let 'im." Daryl turned to me with an upset look on his face,"I know he could be a dumbass from time to time, but he has a point. That's a guaranteed way to survive."
"What happens when you run out of people, Daryl, huh? Answer that!" I shouted at him. He said nothing and stared ahead. My nerves began to calm down,"I'm sorry. It's just that I want to keep my humanity. Turning down that road only loses your sanity."
He nodded his head slightly and not another word was said on that drive.
