Hector and Grace hustled Caylin out to the waiting cruiser. "Grace did you hear me?" Caylin asked as they all piled in.
"Hear what Hun?" She asked as Hector started the car and radioed in requesting back up and checking on the units sent to Leanne's house.
"Her sister Donna is back, we're too late, he took her." Caylin said urgently.
"No I'm sorry, didn't hear you, my mind was racing ahead. Any idea where?"
"Not yet. Try his address maybe?" She answered, and almost jumped out of her skin when her cell phone shrilled. It was Tony.
"She never made it to work sweetie, you hear anything? Should we go her house or home to yours?" He asked sounding worried.
"He got her Tony, I don't know where or how. Her sister showed up and told me."
There was a shocked silence from the other end, then a rapid fire conversation between him and Amy.
"Where are you Caylin?" He asked.
"I'm with Hector and Grace. We tracked down a relative of his and got a couple addresses. We're en route to his house in town, there was another address on the road to Hammond. We're sending units to both. I hope we're not too late." Caylin told him holding back tears.
"What should we do?" He asked.
"Well could you drive to The Magnolia Grove Nursing home and have Amy drive my car home before this weather gets any worse?"
"Okay, is that where the relative lived?"
"Yes, his nana. Such a lovely old lady too. Thinks the son of a bitch holds the moon. Poor thing, she'll be devastated when the news comes out."
Tony smiled to himself on the other end, here was Caylin hunting a killer who took her dear friend, and yet she was worried about the guy's Grandma. That was why he loved her, she was one in a million. It was also why he was not letting her go to the bastard's lair without him. Sure Grace and Hector were there, but they almost lost her before, and so had he for that matter. He wouldn't let it happen again.
"Okay, I'll drop her off. But on the proviso you give me the address you'll be attending. They'll probably want me anyway, hopefully only to photograph evidence." He tacked this last bit on knowing what she must be thinking.
Caylin sucked in a breath and told him Larry Edward's town address.
"Okay meet you there. Stay in the car till I get there Cay, - what Amy?" There was a murmured conversation going on, and Amy came on the line, "Be careful Cay okay?"
A tear finally slid out of Caylin's left eye and she answered, "I promise."
"Would you like me to stay at your's and watch Molly and Jerry? They'll be worried." Amy asked, and the tears began in earnest when Caylin pictured the two clown faced retrievers with their noses pressed against the window as she left. It made her remember the day she had taken Leanne to get Molly and her friend had clung to the dog for dear life on the drive home.
She was silent for a moment, collecting herself.
"Cay? You still there?"
"Yeah! Honey, that would be great. Throw the dead locks on too sweetie, just to be sure. There is fire wood stored in the wood locker in the basement if you need to stoke the fire, and there is some home made soup in the fridge. Get home and stay put, this weather looks bad." Caylin finally answered.
"Okay, look after each other, come home soon. I'll catch you later. Love you sis." Amy said and rang off, after Caylin said she would and she loved her too."What's happening Mijha?" Hector asked from the driver's seat. He had the lights spinning but kept the siren off, as he had told the other officers, hoping for a stealthy approach. The lights were to be cut before they entered the street.
"Tony's coming, he's dropping Amy at my car to take it home, she's watching the dogs." Caylin sniffed and wiped her eyes.
"We'll get her Cay. Leanne is smart, if any one can survive this she can." Hector replied.
Caylin shivered and stared out the window at the snow flakes flying in all directions.
"I hope so." She answered, more to herself than anyone else.**********************************************
Officers Rodrigo and Shanahan approached the address of Leanne Louise. At first look nothing seemed amiss. Aside from the fact the girl's car was parked in the drive with the driver's door hanging open letting in the snow and ice.
Upon approaching the front door, they found it was also hanging open. They quietly approached the premises. They went through the front door and found what Detective Hines had told them via radio was correct. The psychic lady said the bastard already had her friend, she was right.
Here was the very clear evidence of a struggle. A man's muddy boot print marred the cream shagpile, a hastily packed bag of her belongings and a doggy toy were dropped on the living room floor, and the presence of a blood spatter marring the wall behind spoke volumes.
