5 Years Later
I wake up again sweating and breathing heavy. I had been waking up to that dream every month for the past 5 years. Light is seeping through my curtains. My eyes hit just a patch of the light, and it blinds me. I shrink away from it. Slowly, I stretch and go into the little bathroom I have in a small apartment in New York, New York.
Yawning, I turn on the light and start the water in shower. Then I get in the shower and get started for the day. Being a homicide cop has its perks, but leaving pay check to pay check can be a stretch in New York. I have come close to homelessness twice before, but each time something happens that I can't explain. When a letter that says that I lost my house is supposed to come to me it changes. Changes to a letter that says that I have gotten an extension on my lease.
I always wonder what happened, but I never question it. I'm just happy that I got the extension. After I lock up my apartment and get in my car I turn on the radio.
At the station I see Randy. He's just getting there as well. I walk up to him.
"Hey Randy," I say. "What's up?"
He looks at me with his piercing blue eyes.
"Oh hey Holly. Didn't see you there. I'm good. How are you?" he turns on his fake 'I'd like to talk to you smile' as he says this.
"Oh I'm good. Anything get called in yet today?" I ask him trying to make conversation.
"No- oh wait actually yes. There was a shooting down on I-7 and 240. Can you go check it out? Here's the address"
He hands me a paper. When he said where it was at my spine went cold. I read the paper. 1140 Allant Ox Ay, California. That's the same building as five years ago. Randy looks at me strangely.
"Everything alright, Holly?" his eyes hold concern. Too much concern for someone like me.
"Yeah I'm fine. I'll go down to the place and check it out." I quickly grab my coat and walk out the door to my cruiser. In the cruiser I take a deep breath.
I start the car and head to the place I'd never wanted to go back to since five years ago. I pass by here everyday on my way to work. I always get shivers down my back when I pass the building. Every time I pass it I remember that day. I had taken pills to try to erase the memory, but it stayed in my mind.
The buildings still abandoned. Just like it was five years ago. It used to be a donut shop, but it never got any business. As I pull into the parking space I get chilled. It feels like the same thing is happening again here. Once I get out of the car I realize something. This is the same parking space that I was in when I came here long ago.
I walk towards the entrance. That's when I hear something strange. It's like a squeak in the floor board and then it sounds like to people whispering at each other to be quiet. I place my hand to my gun and draw it. I knock on the door.
"LA-PD!" I shout hoping my voice sounds strong.
Not a word or sound comes from the inside.
"I'm coming in." I shout then I kick the door down.
I walk through the doorway. I gasp. Fred is standing in the shadows with a grin on his face. Just when I gasp I hear, "Suprise, Holly. Happy Birthday" shouted.
Fred goes back into the shadows and my mind becomes confused. I look toward the voices. The lights turn on and there is the whole Los Angeles Police Department standing, huddled together, with a cake in their hands. Ryan's holding the cake. He walks up to me after putting the cake down on the small poker table they set up .
He gives me a big hug then whispers, "Happy Birthday, Holly." In my ear.
I feel my lips turning up in a smile. I am so surprised. I had forgotten that its my birthday today. I thank everyone and tell them I was very surprised. We cut the cake then they give me presents. I hadn't had this big of a birthday in a long time.
The presents aren't big, expensive things. Just little things like gift cards, or some type of kitchen utensil. After the presents Ryan put glasses on the table then takes out a bottle. I read the label and gasp. It's a very type of expensive champagne. It's also my favorite.
"Oh, Ryan," I gush. "How did you know? This is my absolute favorite champagne."
He blushes then tells me to drink up. After about two hours the rooms about empty. It's just Ryan, me, and some other new kid who's too drunk to stand. I feel a little woozy myself. I look over at Ryan. He's pouring himself his like fifth or sixth glass of champagne. When I look the other way I feel totally sober again.
Standing on the edges of the shadows is Fred. He is looking at me with a grin that tells me he thinks this is all funny. I stand up and start to walk towards him. I feel funny. Like I'm drawn to him, but then Ryan breaks my trance.
Ryan comes up behind me, and puts his hands on my hips. I take one last look at Fred then I turn up to face Ryan. He has a grin on his face that just tells me he's really drunk. He starts to lean into me. I start to lean into him too. I have had a crush on him since I started at the Police Station, but I'd never thought he'd go for someone like me. This seems to be my only chance.
"Not to be rude or anything, but I need to borrow Holly." a voice chirps up in a mocking tone in the corner.
"Huh?"
I turn towards the voice to see who needs to "borrow me", and I see Fred standing there coming out of the shadows towards me. I look towards a little scared, and Ryan just looks confused. Then he shrugs and just turn around and walks towards the table where the drinks are. I feel like I'm a toy, and I'm just being thrown to another person.
I'm still pretty drunk, and I just sit on the ground. Fred looks at me like I'm a child. He grabs my hands and pulls me to my feet. I don't want to be left alone with Ryan again, so when Fred exits the building I follow him. I need him to answer me questions too. I say a small goodbye to Ryan then rush off after Fred. He's outside standing by a corvette convertible made around 1980s to 1990s. I walk up to it and run my hand along the side of it towards the car handle of the passenger door.
"Nice ride." I tell him nonchalantly.
"I know. Get in."
He gets in the car and opens my door. Then the weirdest thing happended, he waits for me and starts the car.. Even weirder than that I shrug and sit down on the leather seat and buckle up. He smiles and pulls out of the parking lot. At the stop sign he puts up the top, and speeds off down the opposite road I came down.
