THE GIFTED ONE

Chapter 17

We had been walking for a while  and the sun was beginning to set behind us.  My shoulders and feet were beginning to ache but I knew that we had a plan to follow and that we had to get half way through the forest before the day was up.

Everyone else was in front of me chatting, laughing a bit as well. 

I couldn't stop looking around me, I was so worried that something would be lurking in the darkness. The forest was very dense and anything could have been hiding behind the trees.

I carried on walking, looking up at the sky, trying to distract myself from the darkness that was beginning to engulf us all.

'Hey, come on Kat, keep up!!' Tori shouted at me from a few metres ahead.

I quickly ran to them, holding onto my backpack as tightly as I could so that it wouldn't wobble around everywhere.

'Hey!' I said slightly out of breathe.

'Hey slow coach,' Ty said to me, grinning.

'Sorry I am just a bit tired and I don't like the feeling of being in this forest. It feels like something is watching us,' I replied.

'Don't worry Kat, we have your back,' Ky said laughing.

'We will have to stop soon, as it is getting a very dark,' Theo suddenly said, in a very serious voice.

'Ok, we can set up camp here,' Ky pointed to what  seemed like a small clearing.

We walked towards it and I swung my backpack off my back with a huge sigh of relief.

It was starting to get cold, so I rummaged through my bag and took out my coat as Ky, Tori, Stella and Theo started talking.

I shrugged on my coat and crossed my arms, trying o keep warm.

'Ok, Stella, Ky and I are going to go and get some wood so we can make a fire and Theo and Kat will stay here and make the beds for everyone and will start to cook some food,' Tori said.

'Ok,' I replied and began to get some stuff out of my bag, whilst Stella, Tori and Ky walked off in some direction to get some wood.

I hoped they would come back safely.

Theo began to get some of his stuff out as well.

I lay out all of my things, my blanket and the little pillow that I had brought with me.

Theo was still unpacking when I asked him 'what are we going to eat?'

He didn't reply for a while but when he did, he took out about six cans of beans and said 'I hope you like beans because that is all we have.'

I smiled at him and he smiled back. 

'Well you're in luck because I really do like beans,' I replied.

I then sat down on my 'bed' if that is what you could call it and looked up at the sky, it was dark enough to see the stars.So I just looked up at them for a while.

The sky was really beautiful. Sometimes you forget how beautiful nature is.

All of a sudden I heard a stick snap behind me. I got up startled.

'What's wrong?' Theo asked me.

'I heard something,' I said  slightly nervous.

I then heard another sound but this time it was closer and I think Theo heard it too as he got up quickly as well.

I started to move back from the direction of the sound, when I hit something hard.

It was Theo.

He moved round me and stood in front, trying to see what was out there.

'BOOOOOOOO!!' Tori , Stella and Ty shouted running at us.

I jumped out of my skin and my heart was beating about 100 miles an hour.

'That's so not funny,' I said, my voice shaken from the shock.

'I was so scared,' I said.

'Sorry, it was Tori's idea,' Stella said sweetly.

They then placed the wood down on the floor and started to build the fire. 

Once it was built, Theo lit it with a small spark and created a huge flame. The fire gave out a lot of heat and would be perfect for heating up the beans.

We ate mostly in silence as we were very hungry after the long day of walking.

'Ok the first watch shift will be Theo and then it will be me and the Tori. Each shift will be about three hours,' Ky said.

We had finished eating and had been in bed for about two hours but I still couldn't get to sleep.

The fire had nearly died out and I was starting to get cold.

I couldn't help it. My teeth started to chatter uncontrollably and my body kept tossing and turning, trying to find a comfy position.

I then felt an arm lift me up,very gently. Up into a sitting position. I turned around and saw Theo.

He sat down behind and wrapped his arms around me.

I couldn't even think about protesting as I was so cold and tired. I snuggled in closer to his chest and felt the heat radiating from his body. I was so comfortable.

He held out his arm and created a little flame that hovered just above his hand. It gave off a beautiful array of heat that glowed in the darkness.

I then fell asleep very quickly, to the warmth of the flame and to the sweet smell of firewood that lingered on Theo's t-shirt.
