Two Months Later
It's been two days since I've seen Carlos and already I miss him like crazy. The semester hasn't even started yet and I already don't know how I was going to make it through without him.
The dorm halls were crowded with other students moving in and it made me feel claustrophobic. All these strange new people I was going to be living with and was going to have to get to know. And even worse, I was going to have to get used to a new arrangement; one side of the hall was guys’ rooms and the other was girls’. Most of the other girls were probably excited by this but it made me think of Carlos and Emmett and how I suddenly missed them even more. I quickly slipped into my room and dumped my last bag on my already covered bed.
“Hey roommie, you just missed our very hot neighbors,” Samara, my overly peppy new roommate said. I could only assume she meant the guys that inevitably lived across the hall.
“That's okay,” I responded as I began to unpack. “I'm not much of a people person.”
“Wrong,” she replied from the edge of her bed. “The high school you was not much of a people person. The college you can be whatever you want to be.”
“And if I still don't want to be a people person?” I asked.
“Well then that's just too bad because dorm life is all about the people,” she beamed. Samara got up and walked over to me, pulling my arm from opening a box and out of the door. “Come on, all you have to do is say hi. And then if you want to leave, I won't stop you.” I wanted to pull my arm away and tell her no I didn't want to, but part of me knew she had a point. If I was going to make it through college without my best friends, I was going to have to talk to people. At the very least I could meet the people on my floor.
Samara knocked on the door across from ours and a minute later a boy with green eyes and blond hair opened the door. “Hey, Samara right?” he asked her.
I stood awkwardly behind her and watched as she nodded. “Yeah,” she answered. “My roommate came back and I thought I would introduce you guys.” She stepped to the side and his eyes fell on me, smile spreading instantly across his face.
“Hi,” he said. “I'm Jeremy.”
“I'm Jessie,” I replied, giving a slight smile.
“Well, nice to meet you,” he said.
“Where's your roommate?” Samara asked eagerly.
“He stepped out,” Jeremy answered, never taking his eyes off me. “But I'd be happy to tell him to stop by and say hi when he gets back. I'm sure he would like to meet you.”
“I have a boyfriend,” I blurted out nervously.
Jeremy laughed. “And he has a girlfriend,” he said. “Doesn't mean you can't have friends, right?”
“Right,” I said, an embarrassed blush slowly taking over. I looked down at the floor and tugged my arm from Samara's grasp. “I have to go unpack. It was nice meeting you.” I turned around quickly and noticed the sneakers in front of me about a second before I collided with the owner.
“Whoa now beautiful, what's the rush?” they asked.
“Sor-” My apology cut off as I realized I recognized that voice. Looking up, I met the brown eyes I knew so well.
“Haven't we met like this before?” Carlos smiled with one eyebrow raised. A smile of my own spread instantly across my face and I threw my arms around his neck. His arms went around my waist, hugging me to him. “Well this didn't happen when we met, but I like it.” I laughed against him, too happy to see him to think of saying anything.
“I thought you had a boyfriend?” Samara asked accusingly from behind me.
“She does,” Jeremy responded. I turned slightly to look at Jeremy who smiled knowingly at me and suddenly our entire encounter registered. The way he smiled at me quickly, almost as if he knew me. His insistence on me meeting his roommate; believing right away that I had a boyfriend and telling me his roommate had a girlfriend. Putting that together with all of Carlos' secrecy on what school he was going to and it suddenly made sense.
“You're Jeremy's roommate,” I said to Carlos.
Carlos just continued to smile. “Surprised?”
“Yes.”
“In a good way?” he asked for clarification.
“Where you're concerned, it's never anything but in a good way,” I answered.
“Whoa, hold on,” Samara said. “So, you two are dating?”
“Yes,” Carlos answered without looking away from me.
“And Jeremy knew you were dating because you told him and probably showed him her picture, right?” she continued.
“Yes Samara,” Jeremy responded. “Anything else you want to know.”
“No,” she answered. “But I do want to tell you guys this is the cutest thing I've ever seen. I don't know how you found this one Jessie, but he is definitely a keeper.”
“Yeah, he is,” I agreed.
“And so are you,” he said and kissed my cheek. “Which is exactly why I couldn't let you go to some college without me.”
“Like I said,” Samara said. “Too cute.”
