Charlie Is Dead

When I push open the door of the diner, my head was spinning. Charlie had explained what happened to her, and did not leave out Dick Roman, who of course every adult in the world seemed to have heard of and seemed to have been talking about when he suddenly disappeared in late 2012. Then she told me about the Stynes, who of course every adult in the hunter world heard about when rumors were spread around that Dean Winchester had killed all of them.

"Table for two?" the waitress at the desk at the front of the restaurant asked.

"Yep," Charlie answered.

We followed her to a booth somewhere in the back and sat down as she put two menus on the table in front of us. Her name tag read Sabrina.

"Can I get you something to drink?"

"Coffee please," I said and Charlie added "me too."

Sabrina left and I opened the menu card, suddenly not at all hungry.

"Katherine?" Charlie asked.

"Hm?" I said and looked up.

She seemed to change her mind and asked me what I was getting. I decided on a waffle with powdered sugar and Charlie got the same.

"Thank you," I said as Sabrina put our breakfast in front of us, and when she left I added "so how do we find your friends?"

"With your phone. I know their number, I'll text our location and they'll come get us. Only a few people have that number."

"Okay," I said and unlocked my phone before handing it to her.

She opened messages and sent something. When she gave me back my phone I put it next to my plate. Before I even finished cutting off another piece of my waffle I got a text that just read "ok be there in 10". I told Charlie and she waved Sabrina.

"Can you wrap this up for us?"

"Sure, girls. Can I get you anythings else?"

"Four coffees to go," I said, "and two extra waffles."

Charlie looked at me.

"Anyone who replies to a text at three in the morning can use some coffee," I said and followed Sabrina.

I paid for our food and within five minutes we were walking to a gas station across the street, Charlie carrying a tray with the coffees and me carrying a bag that read 'Denny's' and was filled with four boxes containing our midnight breakfast.

Exactly ten minutes after I got the text a black '69 Chevy Impala pulled up and parked in one of the parking spots next to the gas station. Two tall men got out. It was dark, but the small shop in the gas station was still open and the light from within vaguely lit up the faces of the owners of the Impala. Charlie and I had been waiting on a bench in the darkness on the other side of a row of fuel dispensers, but as soon as she saw the brothers she ran towards them. I wanted to warn her, because I could have sworn I saw a gun tucked in the short-haired brother's pants when he stretched after he got out driver's seat. But she was too fast, already halfway across the lot. The brothers were fast too, as soon as they heard Charlie's footsteps they turned around, grabbed their guns and pointed them at the person running towards them.

"Wait!" I yelled and sprinted towards Charlie, stopping beside her, holding her back by the shoulder with my left hand and holding my right hand up to the Winchesters.

"Wait," I repeated.

"Charlie?" the long-haired brother said. I saw him hesitate about the gun in his hand for a second.

"It's me," Charlie said.

"Sammy no," Dean said and Sam's grip got tighter again and I saw his knuckles turn white.

"Who are you?" Sam said.

"It's me, guys," Charlie said.

"Charlie is dead," Dean said without showing any emotion.

"Guys...," Charlie said, her voice breaking.

"Dean," I heard Sam whisper, but Dean quickly shushed him.

"Who's that?" Dean said and pointed at me with his gun for a second.

"Katherine," Charlie answered, "she's a hunter."

Dean rolled his eyes. Sam searched for something in the inside pocket of his jacket and took out a flask.

"Drink," he said and threw the flask to me.

I caught it and took a big gulp. Holy water. I gave the flask to Charlie. Nothing happened when she drank either. The brothers looked conflicted. I didn't know how to prove she was actually Charlie, and I realized now I hadn't really cared about checking. I just assumed she was human.

"I don't know how to prove it's really her, but we've got coffee and waffles... so what do you say about discussing our options while we eat some breakfast?"
