Delia remembered falling.
She remembered, vaguely, how she had a family, somewhere. There had been a mother... and a father.... and, Delia thought, perhaps a brother. It was all so fuzzy.
Right now, she was settled down on a gargantuan mound of leaves, grass, and flowers, all dried out and brown. Names came to Delia. Dandelion. Oak. Maple. They must be the names of the leaves and flowers. Yes. Holding a leaf in her hand, she twirled it absentmindedly between her fingers as she mused.
More names. Someone called Emily. Tulip. Perry. Friends, Delia decided. They were the names of her friends.
Where were her friends? Delia didn't see them around her. Maybe they were at the bottom of the pile. Something told her that they weren't down, but up. Delia looked up. Far above, a distant light glowed. Too high to climb.
"Welcome!" A voice, too cheery, too bright for the dim surroundings, pierced Delia's foggy mind. The voice was coming from below her. Slightly unsteady on her feet, she walked and slid down the seemingly never-ending slope.
When she finally reached the bottom, she was greeted by a plump girl in a pink, frilly dress. Delia cocked her head quizzically at the girl's cheerfulness, and wondering where she had come from.
"Welcome!" The girl repeated. "To the Alice Games!"
