It took Delia a while to get used to the fact that every girl surrounding her would die except one. Jorge, who appeared to be very nice, didn't socialize, and Delia was informed why minutes after recovering.
"Go away, now." She had said, gently shooing Delia towards an empty bed. "I don't get too attatched, Deli-Meat, to anyone. It will just mess things up when I die." She looked at Delia sadly. "I won't win, you know. People sabotage an awful lot here, I won't last a minute when things get serious."
Delia sat down on her bed with a thump. How could she possibly win? Jorge was clever; she knew not to get attatched and she was evidently researching Wonderland. How could Delia win, when her acquaintence was so sure of her own loss?
But, surely as ever, the day of the games crept closer to the contestants, who divided into two groups: those who were certain of their win, and those who knew they walked to their death. Delia walked a tightrope-thin line between those two groups, though she leaned towards the latter.
On the day of the first Challenge, every contestant was corralled into a single room with two exits. Neither of these exits had doors. Just holes in the wall.
The kids clung to each other like frightened sheep. Delia looked around, dazed, as a white rabbit hopped in, checking his watch nervously.
"Ah," he said, greeting the children with a small wave, "You're all here. Um. Well, as the queen is- well, very merciful, she would like those of you who wish to not participate to go through the following door." A tremoring paw gestured to the door behind the competitors.
Almost immediately, a dozen kids lefft the room. Delia would have been one of them, had Jorge not grabbed her arm. "Don't," she whispered, low and intense.
That was when the screams began. The remaining competitors for the Alice Games flinched in horror as they saw the red spray fleck the threshhold.
"S-sorry," the Rabbit managed, "But you must leave a victor or die." He turned to those who remained. "That goes for everyone in the room."
