Delia was nearly blinded by the bright sunlight. Where did this even come from? Delia speculated. I must be miles underground.... perhaps I felt right THROUGH the Earth!  This observation seemed so implausible to Delia that she laughed.

"What 'choo laughin' at?" Thea questioned severely.

"Thoughts," Delia rejoined vaguely.

"Humph" was all Thea said. For a while, there was silence.

This gave Delia time to inspect her surroundings, which, if you haven't guessed already, were strange. A great castle reared its head before her. Its shape was unlike any that Delia had ever seen; it looked almost like the king in chess. Not just any king, either: the very one Delia, herself, possessed at home. Although, Delia did own the most generic chess set ever, so it must have been a coincidence.

The Dormouse led Delia to the castle and the town surrounding it. Delia wondered at the mushrooms lining the walkways; they were as big as trees! Her head swiveled around and around, drinking in the sight of the town. Each house looked different. Here was one that looked like a chess pawn, and next to it a cottage in the shape of a tree stump. A dodo was out for its morning stroll, strange, childlike hands protruding from underneath his wings clutching at an elegant walking stick. A rabbit in a waistcoat dashed by, stopping a moment only to check its watch and moan about the time.  A little girl with skin of porcelain skipped by Delia and her companion, who tugged impatiently at Delia's shoelaces.

"Let's get going then, there's a good girl," she squeaked as she dragged Delia away from the sights, sounds, and smells of the wondrous city.

The castle wasn't nearly as bright and bustling. The grim fortress loomed threatening to fill Delia's entire view.  Two ironclad guards flanked oaken doors.

"State name and business," one ordered stiffly.

"Maverick!" The Dormouse cried angrily. "I'm your sister!"

"No exceptions, Thea," Maverick replied pompously.

"Oh, come on Mav, I've got a contestant with me," Thea complained. "'Sides, ya already know my name."

The second guard swiveled to Maverick. "Let 'em in, you twit."

Maverick sighed barked an order. The gates opened.
