Chapter 2: The Loner

Travis followed the creature from the air, as Jasmine sped past to get in front. She waited for the right moment to enter into the patch of trees so she could get in easily without hitting any trees. When just that opportunity rose, she ran in and came to a complete stop. She looked up into the sky and saw her brother coming closer and she could feel the ground move each time the creature's feet hit the ground. Knowing this; she figured that it is quite large. The trees in front of her were rustling, so she started to form a light shield. It stretched out extremely wide so the creature could not avoid it. Emerging quickly from the trees, the black furred creature went straight for the shield. Jasmine braced herself for impact as it drew closer. As it came to about five feet before the shield it jumped up into the air and over the shield as well as the trees. Rising out from the trees, it jumped past Travis almost hitting him clean out of the air.

This shocked Travis as the creatures have never been able to jump that high. "Well that's new!" Down below; Marissa saw what just happened. "Don't just hover there Travis! Go after him!" He set off in hot pursuit and so did the others. Knowing she wasn't as fast as the others, Marissa took this time to think about what just happened. 'Who ever is making these things must be modifying them. If this carries on much longer we might not be able to stop them. We have to find the source and put an end to this before it gets out of hand.' She was still thinking when she saw the trees becoming less dense and a clearing a few feet away. "Jasmine, Travis stop! We're too close to HIS territory! A few more feet and there's going to be huge trouble!" As they herd the warning they immediately stopped where they were. The creature however did not and ran into the clearing. A black blur shot towards it. As the blur collided with the creature, the creature was decapitated. Its head flew through the sky with its thick crimson blood trailing behind it. The head fell to the ground and the blood stained the grass. The blur came to a stand still and stood upright. The silhouette was human form. Clothed in black; shirt, pants and shoes and holding an extremely sharp ebony sword, his second one holstered on his back. Travis knew immediately who it was. "Matthew!"

Matthew cleaned the blood off of the blade by dragging it over his forearm. He holstered his sword crossed with the other one, forming an X on his back. Crouching down he grabbed the creature's head by it hair and picked it up. Its face could be terrifying to most, but not to him. The face resembled that of a bear's but with sharper teeth, a larger jaw bone and long pointed ears. The blood still dripped from its head to the green grass below. His voice was deep and cold with no sign of emotion as he spoke. "You're one ugly, unlucky bastard, aren't you? But at least you'll make a well enough trophy. So Travis, I see you three still find it hard to kill these puny things." Travis landed on the ground just where the clearing began and stared Matthew dead in the eyes. "And I see you learned not to set your 'goodie two shoes' in my territory." "You don't own this patch of land!" "Humph! Your cockiness is going to get you killed one day."

Travis clenched his hands into fists and spoke in an angered tone of voice. "Not before I kill you!" his right fist began to glow and then shot out a ball of light energy the size of a baseball. The projectile flew towards Matthew, who didn't even try to get out of the way, and hit him on the right shoulder. The impact forced his shoulder back an inch and ripped a hole in his shirt and wounded him. He showed no sign of pain as he stalked towards Travis. Travis stared at the bleeding shoulder as the wound slowly started to heal. Once face to face neither of them broke eye contact as they held a stare down. Matthew grabbed Travis by the neck and violently shoved him into the tree at the back, sending small pieces of wood and splinters flying. Travis tried to break free but to no avail.

Matthew squeezed harder as Travis tried kicking him. "Once again you think just because you're a hero, you can defeat whoever you appose. Well I've got some news for you. Until you stop focusing on protecting those weaklings in the city, you will never be able to beat me. They make you soft and that is the reason you are weak." He released his grip on Travis's neck and set him down. "Now leave at once or suffer the consequences." He turned around and began to walk away. Not heading the warning Travis pulled out his pistol and aimed it at Matthew. "I'll kill you where you stand!" Matthew turned around and pressed his forehead against the barrel of the gun. "Okay, then do it! Pull the trigger and end my life! You won't get a chance like this ever again! Do it!!!"

Travis hesitated and his arm started to shake. "Just as I thought, you can't. Because I haven't harmed the innocent or is it because you don't have the guts? Get out of my sight!" Using his left arm, Matthew whacked away the pistol and with his right he punched Travis in the face, sending him down to the ground. "Travis!" Jasmine screamed as her brother laid there motionless. She ran to his side and lifted his head. "Don't worry; I didn't hit him hard enough to kill him or anything. But next time I won't be so lenient, so keep him away from here if you want him to stay alive." He then turned around and walked away. She looked down at her brother and then back up at Matthew. And then spoke in her soft kind voice, "Thank you..." He stopped and tilted his head in her direction, just so he could see her. His crimson eyes seemed to burn through her skin and into her soul. No emotion could be detected in his gaze. He turned his head once again and continued to walk away. Marissa then came over to Jasmine and helped her to pick up her unconscious brother. "Come on Jasmine; let's get your brother home." She nodded and they carried him off, leaving the headless corpse of the creature to rot.
