Chapter 4: The Legend

Marissa and the others arrived at home and Travis had just regained consciousness. Marissa came over to him to wipe the dirt off of his face, "Happy now mister loud mouth? You just got you ass kicked again!" Travis pulled her arm out of his face and she could see he was irritated. "I wasn't prepared. I could have beaten him if he didn't have the element of surprise." "He had the element of not hesitating, like you did." Jasmine said pointing out the obvious. "He got lucky, that's all. I can take him with both hands tied behind my back!" Marissa started to get tired of his childishness, "Keep talking and we might just do that and drop you in front of his damn house." His eyes widened and he didn't say a word. "Yeah didn't think so." Jasmine giggled. Marissa grabbed her car keys and went to the door. "Jasmine, stay here and heal those bruises around your brother's neck. I'm going out to check on my mother, she has been sick for quite a while now." She opened the door, stepped out and closed it behind her.

Walking down the driveway she fumbled with her keys and unlocked her car. Her car was a metallic blue BMW Z4. It might have been a vintage car, but she absolutely loved it. She inserted the key into the ignition and turned it causing the engine to roar to life. Stepping on the gas she took of at her own pace. Even though the car could go much faster, she was no speed freak. She drove through the city streets that were torn up by the war, weaving left and right avoiding all the debris. Small children were playing outside, seeming all too happy with their surroundings. Who could blame them? These were the only living conditions they ever knew. Slowing down she turned into the driveway of one of the more luxury homes in the city. She turned off the engine and got out of the car. Pressing the button with her index finger, she locked the car and walked to the front porch. When she got to the door, she noticed that it was open. 'Strange, mom never leaves the door open.' she thought to herself. She opened the door slowly and entered the house very cautiously. The smell of supper filled the house and she could hear very faint voices coming from the living room. Her mother was the most esteemed scientist in the entire town, so Marissa thought that maybe someone might have broken in and tried to hurt her mother. She got ready to attack as she neared the corner of the living room. Taking a deep breath she jumped into the room and was surprised at what she saw. There sat her mother alongside someone she knew very well. She gasped before screaming her name out of joy. "Nova!"

Matthew scanned the bookshelf with his finger and stopped at a particular book. He pulled it out and threw it on the table that Moon and Caroline were sitting on, seeing that they destroyed the only chair in the entire house. The book was in bad condition, torn edges, faded color and dust everywhere, it seemed ancient. Moon picked it up and paged through, but could not understand a thing that was written inside. "What the hell is this supposed to be?" Matthew took it from her and set it down on the table. "It's an ancient book of legends, all written in Latin. It speaks of many different beings and creatures that lived thousands of years ago, but right now we are only interested in one. It is said that during the time of a great war God created a tribe to rival them all and proclaim his name. But to lead such a tribe God needed to create a powerful leader and so Emris was born."

Moon was still confused and was struggling to see any point in this. "I never heard of this Emris." "That's because it didn't last long. Emris meant immortal and that was exactly what it was. Unable to be killed and unable to die. But God was repulsed at His creation, because Emris could be as cruel and bloodthirsty as it was kind and caring. So God decided such a being could not lead His tribe, but because God made Emris immortal not even He could kill it completely. So He split the good and evil sides from each other and forged them into two crystals. The Hikaru (light) and the Nero (dark) crystals. He hid them far away from each other so humans could not find and reunite them. But that all changed 25 years ago when our parents found them." Caroline then stepped of the table and confronted Matthew, "Wait just a second. How would you know if our parents found it?" "I was getting to that, just be patient. So after discovering the crystals they ran some tests and the power of the crystals were revealed to them. The government then ordered them to commence further research and develop weapons to help the war effort, but to no avail. So it was decided the crystals were to be hidden once again, my mother and father leading the expedition carrying the Nero crystal. Due to long exposure to the energy that radiated from the crystals, their DNA was slightly altered.

Then by time people like us were born, given these abnormal abilities through our DNA merging more thoroughly with the energy. My brother was the second of our kind. He was strong, thick headed and a loose canon. As he became older he found out about the crystals and was convinced that he could do what our parents could not. So he killed them in order to get the location of where the Nero crystal was hidden. The memories of their death still haunt me to this vary day." He was silent for a moment and still his face showed no emotion. The room was quiet and Moon could not contain herself. "So what happened after that?" "After he got the coordinates he went out in search of it and eventually found it. On his journey he found a broken man, ironically it was the first of our kind. He was kicked out of his own house and was rejected by everyone. My brother took him to his side and that man became his servant. Together they overtook cities and killed all those who apposed them, before silently disappearing into the shadows."

Moon got up and grabbed Matthew by his shirt and shoved him against the wall and screamed in his face. "You're wasting my time! All this shit you've been talking about has told me absolutely nothing about what happened to the Blood Hounds! Now you better start talking or you and I are going to have some serious problems." She was still holding Matthew within her firm grasp, when suddenly he disappeared and then reappeared behind her. "Listen to me and listen real good. You might think that you are more powerful then a lot of people and you probably are, but you haven't even scratched the surface of your powers. So don't even think about taking me on. Now sit down, shut the fuck up and be patient." They both stared each other down, until finally Moon gave up and went to lean against the wall. Matthew could see she was pissed, but he couldn't care less. "Soon after they vanished, my brother saw that there was a small threat to his plan and that was a band of assassins called the Blood Hounds. So he sent his servant to infiltrate their ranks and take out the crucial members from the inside. In doing so he thought the band of assassins would simply fall apart, but they didn't. So he instructed the inside man to take them unarmed to a place where they could easily be ambushed. My brother had by that time figured out how to create creatures using the powers of the Nero crystal. The creatures and the inside man did their best to eliminate everybody died that day, but seeing that you two are still alive, they didn't do their job well enough. It is strange that you two would end up working for the same man who killed your friends and family." Caroline walked to the window and stared up into the sky. "If what you say is true then how come we never saw this traitor when we were there?" "After that day he realized that what he was doing was horribly wrong. He never went back to my brother and I haven't found a trace of him again, but I know he's out there somewhere..."
