"Mo?" My mother's voice drifted through the air and landed on my skin. As it sunk into my brain, I felt that she was talking to me. "Mokaia?" She called again, using the proper version of my name. Although I could tell that she was calling to me, I was not able to hear how she pronounced my name. I never would.
I did not move. She came closer.
"Mokaia, listen to me..." I felt her body lean slightly against mine. "I know that a couple months ago, you saw the file on you father. I-"
It's fine. I thought. I still did not move. She sighed. Placing a hand on her shoulder, she started to tell me that I had beautiful eyes. No.
She stopped speaking suddenly. I heard the question in her silence.
No. I do not have beautiful eyes. I do not have eyes. I have no nose. I have no ears. I have no mouth. I only have skin and a brain. I am not beautiful. I am ugly.
I felt the gasp leave her lips. "No, Mokaia, why would you think such a thing! I will not stand for you to-"
Leave. I interrupted once again. I felt her surprise. Her hesitation. I felt the emotion in her voice as she said, "what?" I said, leave mother. Leave me alone.
She stood up, tears pouring from her face. I could feel them splash on the floor as she backed away slowly. "I-I... I love you, Mokaia." And with that, she turned and left.
I could hear her sobs through the door.
