Chapter Four

"You lied to me." Were the first words of many to come out of my mouth. Matt was quiet for a moment before he spoke up to defend himself.

Except he didn't defend himself. "What were you doing in my room?"

I ignored him as I grabbed the shirt from the box and threw it at him, "You lied to me!" I repeated loud enough for the whole apartment complex to hear.

"Aurora-"

"No, I don't want your shitty excuses, Murdock. You could have gotten killed!"

He laughed, a cruel, humorless laugh, "I'm not going to get killed."

"Because you can see the future, right?" I spat sarcastically, as I picked up one of the boots from the box and threw it at him as well. He dodged it was ease, "You're not a superhero Matthew, you don't have a suit of iron, or a green beast inside you."

He took a step forward, "I never claimed to be a hero."

"Then what the hell are you doing?"

He was silent for a moment, as he picked up the boot I had thrown at him, and the shirt and placed them back into the box. I watched him, half tempted to grab the other boot and hit him with it. If I was smart, I'd grab a lighter and burn the box where it stood.

I'm not so smart.

"I know it doesn't make any sense." He said slowly, as he exhaustedly sat on the couch. I hesitated, despite wanting to strangle him for his stupidity, I so badly wanted to sit beside him. To feel him so close to me.

I sat on the other end of the couch.

"But-" He paused, "I know by doing this, I can stop innocent people from getting hurt."

"You're going to get hurt." I stated, "One day you're going to go out there, and you won't come home." I winced at the thought, "What would I do without you?" The thought of fending for myself again made my heart sink. Of living a life off the streets of Hell's Kitchen without Matt beside me -even if he didn't share the same feelings for me as I did for him. "What about Foggy? What would he do without you?"

Despite him being blind, he turned his face towards me, as if he were actually looking at me, "This city is infected with a plague of criminals, Aurora. Bodies are being found just lying on the streets, and those who left them there are not being punished. There are secret organizations out there that aren't just migrating in this city, but running it."

I hesitated, trying to calm my racing heart, "And you think you can stop them? You think you can save this city?"

"No, of course not, but I know that I can at least try."

"Listen," I took a deep breath, "I know my father trained you, but that doesn't mean you're invincible. It's not your job to clean up Hell's Kitchen."

He shook his head and sat back, "I can't just sit around and do nothing, I refuse to sit around and do nothing."

A long silence formed between us as we both sat on the couch staring blankly at the wall. I wanted to say more, I even opened my mouth to do it, but chose not to. Knowing Matthew, no amount of words will change his mind once he's convinced of something.

I can see this is something he's passionate about, even if it's batshit insane.

I swallowed, and I chose to claim my defeat. "I hate it. I hated it the first time you did it, and I will hate it the next hundred times." I clenched my fist, "I swear to God, Matt, if you go out there one night, and I don't see your repulsive face that next morning, I will never forgive you."

He nodded.

"Promise me."

"You know I can't promise you-"

"I know." I cut him off, "Just-" I paused, "Promise me you won't take on more than you can handle."

Again, he nodded, "Yeah, I promise."

That night, I hardly slept. Since Matt wasn't hiding it anymore, he didn't keep it a secret that he was going out. I found myself unable to close my eyes until I knew he was back home safely, which I knew was going to affect my sleeping schedule immensely.

When morning arrived, and I walked out of my bedroom, Matt was already awake, leaning against the kitchen counter, a coffee cup in his hand.

"Good morning." He said, his voice low. I walked over to him as he handed me a cup that he already had prepared for me.

I grunted as a 'thank you' and hoisted myself up onto the counter where I sat, half asleep with a warm coffee cup in my hand.

"I hate you." I muttered as I took a sip.

"I don't blame you." He said with a faint grin which I immediately regretted my choice of words.

"I don't actually hate you."

"I know, Aurora."

"You piss me off though."

"I know." He was silent for a moment, as his head faced the floor. He cleared his throat, "I know you were awake last night, when I came back."

I nodded, even though I know he couldn't see. "I was worried."

"I don't know how to reassure you." He said honestly, "I'd rather you not worry at all."

I was about to tell him that was impossible, but his cellphone began to vibrate on the counter, and this time, I managed to swipe it before he did.

I answered it knowing exactly who it was, "Hi Foggy!"

"Aurora! Where's Matt?"

"Still in bed." I lied, which made Foggy make a strange noise that sounded like a mix of a grunt and a scream. I laughed as Matt took the phone from me, and put it on speakerphone, "What do you want, Foggy?"

"I think I found a case, and you best get your ass over here in twenty minutes, because it's a good one."
