Gianna Nolan didn't exist.
Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes were tracking records of the latter when they came across an unopened cryo pod containing a young girl. They woke her up to discover that she didn't have documents and was essentially abandoned in the Hydra facility that the pair had come across.
Later on they find that Gianna could be of assistance to them, her having powers that she didn't disclose.
After all, a girl with no records within any database couldn't be trusted, right? But Steve was desperate and guilty. He couldn't just leave her there all alone. Then, Steve decides that she could be an asset to the team, and recruits her to fight against Tony Stark.
It's there that Gianna will make her discovery that there is a life for her outside of Hydra.
