Run Away With Me

*Request on the way*

Kellin
I didn’t understand why my mother and father wanted me to go visit them for Thanksgiving. Seriously, I was awkward in social situations, and I know for sure that they’re inviting family over, which means I have to sit through hours of old people asking me how I’m doing in school, is my health okay, and if I have a girlfriend. That last question always ends up with me dying of laughter, because I’m not attracted to girls and no one knows that.

You know, it actually sucks to be driving two days before Thanksgiving due to the fact that everyone and their mothers are going out of town. I look at my GPS and reroute it so I can get the hell out of traffic. I should already know every possible route to get to Michigan since I was born and raised their, but I’m way too forgetful for that. The GPS says to turn off of the highway and onto a seemingly empty exit, which I’m thankful for.

I do as I’m told and exit out of the highway and onto this mysterious road that I’ve never been on before. I follow the directions that appear on the GPS and drive for about a mile when I see someone standing on the side of the road. I really have no idea whether to pick the person up, or just drive as if I never saw them. Of course, I’m not a heartless dick, and there are no cars in sight, so I slow down and come to a stop in front of the guy. I unlock the passenger side door and open it, nodding my head for him to come in. “Thank you, so much.” The stranger says. This guy has really wavy long brown hair and doesn’t look a day over twenty.

“No problem. Where you headed?” I ask continuing to drive and follow my GPS. I look over at him just long enough to see him shrug. “So you’re just hitch hiking to go anywhere?”

“Yeah, pretty much.” He says looking out the window. “I actually just want to get away from all this.” By ‘all this’, I believe he is referring to Illinois because that’s the state we’re in now. I’ve been driving for a few days now, since I’m coming all the way from California. “Oh, I’m Vic, by the way.”

“The name’s Kellin.” I introduce myself without my eyes leaving the road. “So, what’s so bad with Illinois?”

“Actually, nothing I just want to get away from all the drama that people cause.” He sighs, “I’ve been doing this for  weeks now.”

“I take it your parents aren’t very happy with your new life choice?” I say, and then immediately regret it. I’m basically trying to pry into this guy’s personal life, so I’ll admit I’m being nosey. “Y-you don’t have to tell me, it was a stupid question.”

“No, no. It’s fine.” He says before sighing heavily, “Okay, so I don’t really keep in contact with my family, but when I do, they’re just calling or visiting to tell me how much of a fuck up I am. So to answer your question, no my parents do not approve of my life choices.” Damn… That was deep.

“I-I’m sorry.” I look over to him again but he shakes his head.

“No need to apologize, guy. You had no idea.” He said before going completely silent. We drive in silence for a while; it’s an awkward silence that makes the air in the car heavy; I don’t like it. I look down at my fuel gauge; a quarter full. I continue to drive until I see a gas station and then I pull into it and get out the car. “Need help?” Vic asks getting out too. I shake my head; I’ve done this a bunch of times before. “Well, I’ll be back; I got to take a piss.” He says before walking off to the restroom.

I swipe my credit card into the gas pump’s pay system and begin to refuel my car. What have I gotten myself into? When I get to my parent’s place, they’re going to freak when they find out I have a hitch hiker with me. I stop putting in gas and hang the pump back up before getting in the car again. I could leave him, but then I’d be exactly like one of those people who didn’t pick him up before, a heartless douche.
My conscience gets the best of me and I wait for Vic to come back, which he does relatively quickly. He gets in and fastens his seatbelt once more and looks at me. “Want to just keep going?” He asks. What? I give him a confused look and he sighs—which seems to be his thing—“As in just drive anywhere, to just forget the world?”

Forget the world? Drive anywhere? Is this guy kidding? I’m nineteen where the hell would I get money to eat? Vic must sense that I’m thinking about all this stuff because he says, “Don’t think, just do.” I don’t even know him! He could be a rapist or even a murderer. “I bet by the time we get where you’re going you’re going to want to keep driving across the country.” I make a sound that says ‘yeah right’ and Vic smirks. “Watch.” Hey mutters.

I drive in silence for about five miles before Vic speaks again, “You never did tell me where you were going.”

“I’m driving to my parent’s house in Michigan.” I explain; he nods.

“You don’t look very old. Why’d you leave?” He asks. I sigh, not wanting to answer. “Hey, I told you about my shitty parents, you should at least tell me about yours.” He had a point; I did bud into his personal business.

“Well, I was tired of their smoke and mirrors act in front of neighbors and other people. Plus, my stepdad is a dick and I couldn’t stand him. It also didn’t help that my mom would always bitch at me, so last year I moved to Cali.” He doesn’t speak for a little bit, which makes me wonder if he thinks I’m a retard for doing that.

“Good call.” He says. I’m caught off guard by his words and I make a ‘huh?’ sound. “I wouldn’t want to stay there either. Which makes me wonder, why would you go back there?”

“Family tradition, every family member from across the country goes to one of our houses for Thanksgiving, and this year it’s my parent’s place.” He nods slowly.

“We should go across country together.” He repeats his intentions from earlier. “I mean, seriously. You family sounds like a bunch of assholes.” I don’t speak, so he continues, “Think of all the fun it would be to just forget about everything weighing you down and just drive, nonstop.” It did sound like fun; just me and a complete stranger, driving across country. And when this piece of junk breaks down, we make our way by hitch hiking like he was doing earlier. Interesting.

After two hours of driving, I finally make it to my old house, pulling into the empty driveway. Vic is sleeping right now, but when I stop he jolts awake. “Where are we?” He asks looking around frantically.

“My parent’s house.” I say staring at the house, not moving. The lights are on in the living room, so I know my parents are home.

“Aren’t you going to go in?” Vic asks cautiously. Now that I’m thinking about it, I really did hate my parents. I shake my head, “So you’re choosing nomadic life?” His eyes light up when I nod my head, starting my car up again.

“Just you and me, getting away from the world.” I say stepping on the gas, hard and screeching out of the driveway. A new beginning.

I'm working on a request I just need to get over the writers block I'm experiencing because of it. So, that should be up by Friday.
