MY POV

A helicopter goes by as I watch Carl and Sophia play checkers. We all look up at the helicopter as it heads for the city were by.

"Are we gonna go soon?" Sophia asks her mom. Carol looks at Sophia with a sad expression.

"I don't know, baby. I sure hope so." Carol says and Sophia looks down at the board. My stomach growls and Carl looks at me then at Lori.

"I'm hungry. Bryana is too." Carl says.

"I know, Carl. We all are." Lori says looking at the ground after.

     "Why don't I get um' something to eat. Ed's all in this survival stuff. We have enough MRE's to feed a small army." Carol

"I'd sure appreciate it." Lori says jumping off the front of the car hood Shane is in.

"No trouble." She walks out of my view and I hear the door open and then slam shut.

"What in the hell did you tell her that for? We don't even know these damn people." Ed says trying to be quiet but I can still hear him.

"That boy and girl are hungry. We can spare one box."

"It's called operational security. How long do you think this stuff is gonna last if you keep running your damn mouth off to everybody we meet?"

"I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking." Carol says. Well... there goes are meal. Lori walks back over to the car Shanes in and start talking to him. Shane gets out of the car and closes the door.

"It's all gone. I'm gonna go up the road, see what I can see." Shane says heading up the road. Lori starts after him.

"I'll come with you." Lori says.

"Ed must have forgot to pack those MREs. I found these in my purse." Carol says to Lori which stops Lori and Shane.

"It's all right. Um... Listen, do you mind keeping an eye on Carl and Bryana for a minute?"

"No." Lori looks at me and Carl.

"Shane and I are gonna go scout up ahead a little bit and see if we can find someone that knows what's going on." Lori rubs Carl's head.

"We want to come with you." Carl says for me and him. Yes I would like to come thanks for asking.

"Huh-uh. Huh-uh" Lori makes the noise as she shakes her head 'no'. Shane then walks up to us.

"Hey, we'll be back before you two know it. Okay, little man, huh?" Shane smiles at us both and fake punches Carls shoulder. Carl smiles and turns back facing the board game. The two start playing again.

"Your dad's nice." Sophia says and Carl just looks up at her with sadness in his eyes. He just started talking, please don't make him stop again. Why did she have to bring it up?
