(btw its a masquerade ball)

tord's gaze darted around the room. people waltzed to the music echoing throughout the room, intertwining with the sound of chatter and smell of food. he felt his mask begin to slide downwards, instantly fixing it again with his gloved hand. the blood red feathers weighed it down on one side. maybe he also added too many jewels.

shaking the thought away, tord made his way forward. to be honest the masks creeped him out a little bit. i mean, he didn't know any of these people. or did he? it was hard to tell.

tord's black shoes clicked against the marble floor of the ballroom. he smoothed his elegant tailored suit before looking around the room to find anyone. in the corner of the room was a boy who seemed his age. he looked flustered and uncomfortable. his mask was a pastel blue, blue jewels lining the outside of the eye holes. it was speckled with darker blue sparkles, aqua feathers protruding from each side. this boy's mask was especially creepy; inside the eyeholes were endless voids of darkness. where were his eyes!?

intrigued yet still having a small feeling of fear in his stomach, tord began to walk towards him, chest puffed out and arms behind his back.

the other boy saw him and noticeably flinched, as if intimidated. he fumbled with his sleeves, trying to fold them back and look more presentable.

tord stopped in front of him. "hello."

"..hi."

a moment of silence passed.

"your mask is.. nice," tord blinked in confusion, awkwardness edging his voice.

"thank you. uh, yours too," he replied.

"thanks. i know we can't exactly tell each other our names, so, i'll... i'll call you blue."

a shy smile appeared on blue's face. "i'll call you red."

tord nodded. now that he was up close, blue's voids didn't seem too frightening. they had more of a friendly glint to them, though.. still startling.

a new song started up, the orchestra on the stage making their magic with the instruments.

"would you care to dance?" tord held out his hand, smiling.

the visible parts of blue's face turned a light pink. "i- um- sure!"

"great." he chuckled, taking blue's hand and leading him to the center of the room.

tord placed his hand on blue's waist, holding his other. blue did the same except put his hand on tord's shoulder.

i didn't notice his curves, tord thought, stepping to the side and blue following suit. his body is so... his thought trailed off when he met blue's gaze, giving him a smile.

they danced gently like that until the song ended; chests inches apart, hot breath on each other's face.

tord eventually pulled away and scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. "want to, uh... go to the garden behind here?" he asked.

"are we allowed?"

"if we don't get caught."

"i'm in."

snickering amongst themselves, the boys managed to sneak out. they swiftly raced down the empty halls of the castle, feet pitter pattering on the glossy wooden surface.

tord pushed open the large doors that led to the garden. carvings of lions and plants and swirls were etched into the wood.

blue got out first, the cool night air blowing over him soothingly. he exhaled deeply and looked around.

different plots of small land homed different types of flowers. roses, tulips, orchids, you name it. the full moon illuminated the space just enough to see, and the stars helped as well.

blue squealed in excitement, walking down the cobblestone path. tord followed close behind and sighed contentedly.

"it's so beautiful, isn't it?" he hummed.

"yeah.. it's breathtaking," blue added.

a rectangular pond was at the end of the garden, lily pads floating lazily above the water. fireflies buzzed and flickered on and off while flying aimlessly. dark circular figures moved around in the water; turtles, tord concluded, since it was kind of hard to see through the murkiness. there were also other figures, long and gliding easily through the water. probably fish.

blue sat down criss cross in front of the edge, leaning over and looking in. "there's some koi fish!" he exclaimed, causing a few to dart away.

"mhm." tord sat next to him, pushing his mask up to the bridge of his nose. "hey, blue?"

"yeah?"

"what's your real name?"

the boy stayed silent, shifting for a couple seconds. "why? don't we wait till midnight for that?"

"that's bullshit," tord scoffed.

"i think it'd be more romantic.." blue mumbled in embarrassment, his finger tracing over a crack in the stone.

"..oh." tord's face flushed. "y- you're right. sorry."

"it's f-"

he was interrupted by the loud sound of the church bell ringing, claiming it to be midnight because of the 12 times it rang.

it went silent after that, the only sounds being the natural sounds of the garden around them.

"...well then," tord cleared his throat and turned to face blue. "i guess we-"

before he could finish his sentence, blue cupped tord's cheeks with his hands and leaned in. their lips met. fireflies danced around them and tord could've sworn they formed a heart.

eventually tord pulled away, but not too far. their lips were millimeters away, hovering over each other.

"tom," blue whispered breathlessly.

"tord," tord responded softly.

their lips met once again, this time with more passion. tord placed his hands on tom's shoulders, both their eyes squeezed shut.

tord pulled away again and reached to the back of tom's head, untying his mask. it fell limply off of the boy's face and landed on his lap. tord found himself speechless at the beauty of him. he was so.. breathtaking. kind of like the garden, but... better.

tom took tord's mask off. his breath hitched and his cheeks were dusted a light pink.

"tom.." tord whispered.

tom gave a smile, nodding. "tord."
