Without a doubt, you're all I dream about

At night we lie awake

With stories taking us back to the nights we felt alive

The nights we felt alive

"I'll be right back, guys," I said, standing. Aleks met my gaze and gave me a knowing look. I bit back my grin and made my way to his and James's shared room. Yeah, yeah, spare me the lecture.

I waited a few minutes, hearing muffled voices and then footsteps coming upstairs. Aleks opened the door and stepped in, shutting and locking the door behind him. In an instant, I was in front of him, pulling him close. Our lips met. It was like this that we went back to before he'd met James, back to the nights we helped each other feel alive. He felt that with James, now, too, but he said it was nowhere near as good as with me. Which was why we made "this" a regular thing.

Not breaking the kiss, he pushed me back and we fell on to the bed, him on top of me. I pushed him back, our lips disconnecting. He looked at me questioningly and I smirked, flipping us over.

"Nice try," I muttered, and then began kissing his jaw and neck. He let out a muffled moan.

~timeskip because I'm not writing all this I mean it's pretty obvious what happens... I couldn't make it more obvious, could I? ohohohoh~

Afterwards, we stood on either side of the bed, pulling our clothes on. He started to walk out almost immediately after he was finished. I walked over to him quickly, grabbing his wrist, stopping him. He looked back at me, confused.

I pulled him back to the bed and we sat down. My hand moved to his and I held it.

"What?" He asked.

I shrugged. "Stay a while. What rush are you in?" I asked casually.

He shook his head, but made no move to stand up again. "I've got to go back, they'll start to wonder."

"They already do," I pointed out. "Even James. What's the harm in staying a bit longer?"

Aleks pulled his hand out of mine and fell silent, looking at his lap. "James proposed."

Oh. Oh. I froze, speechless for a few moments.

"And?" I asked, swallowing my fear and the sinking feeling in my stomach. "Why would he do that, if he knows we're--"

"Maybe he thought it'd stop us."

"And will it?"

Silence again.

"Do you remember that time we went to Vegas?" He asked, finally looking at me.

"Of course," I answered. "How could I forget?"

"I can't believe I almost convinced you to marry me," he said, a nostalgic smile on his face.

"'Almost'?" I said incredulously.

He turned his whole body towards me. "What?"

I would've married you in Vegas

Had you given me the chance to say "I do"

Could I make it more obvious, could you

Be anymore obvious

"I would have married you in a heartbeat had you given me the chance to say 'I do.' But then you changed your mind. We left Vegas and it was after that that you met James, and now, here we are." I reached out, grabbing his left hand. On his finger, a silver engagement ring rested. A perfect fit, it seemed. "And you just can't help it, can you? Could you make it any more obvious?" I asked him, and he didn't meet my eyes. "Could you be any more obvious?"

"I'm sorry," he said simply. He stood and walked back downstairs, and this time I let him. The voices downstairs grew quiet and I heard Aleks's voice - although muffled - and then --

"WHAT?" That was James, yelling angrily, and his anger seemed more genuine.

I heard footsteps again, only this time they were storming upstairs and Aleks was shouting, "JAMES, NO!" Before the door burst open and an absolutely livid James stalked up to me, pulling his fist back. It all happened so fast I didn't even have time to register that I was supposed to be afraid, because then someone was holding James back, preventing him from hitting me.

"James," Aleks said quietly. "Leave him alone."

James was still glaring at me, breathing heavily. He wrenched his arm out of Aleks's grasp. "Don't fucking touch me," he looked at the ground, venom dripping from each syllable. "Get out of my room. Get the fuck out, right now."

Hastily, Aleks and I left, closing the door behind us. We heard James yell angrily and the sound of something small and metallic hitting the door. I glanced down at Aleks's left hand and realised he'd taken the ring off.

I looked up at him. "You... You told them?'

He just nodded. "I had to. Every time we go back to those nights, I fall more in love with the distance put between him and I."

"I can fucking hear you out there, you assholes!" James yelled from inside his room.

"Oh, fuck," Aleks muttered, and we both moved hastily away from the door. We found our way outside after having pulled some ninja-esque stunts to avoid everyone else. We ran out the door and down the street, wanting to live our lives without doubt for at least a few minutes.

We collapsed on a park bench, out of breath but laughing nonetheless. We weren't laughing out of sheer happiness or at James or anything, we were laughing out of relief. Relief that we no longer had to keep ourselves secret from everyone.

Aleks leaned over, placing his head on my shoulder, and I wrapped my arm around him.

"Why," he asked, "didn't we do this sooner?"

"I don't know," I answered. "But now that we have, I'm sure as hell the happiest I've ever been."
