Izzy
"Stop!" I shouted, getting up, "leave him alone!"

Once I regained a steady balance, I went over to try to get whoever these people were off of him. Fighting with every punch and kick with all the power I could muster.

"Go, Izzy. Go! " Zo attempted to fight back as he advised me, "leave-call some-"

Before he could finish his sentence, he was punched in the mouth. Blood spewed and trickled down the corner of his mouth as they lifted his head off the ground by the collar of his shirt.

As one guy raised his fist to punch him again, I jumped on his back and starting choking him. Attempting to throw as many blows as I could to the back of his head, I was thrown to the ground.

"Keep that bitch off me man!" he screamed at his guys.

Lonzo still fighting back, called out to me, "Izzy leave!"

In the corner of my eye I noticed my backpack on the ground. Remembering that my mom had put mace on my key ring, I hurried to grab it thinking that was the next best thing I had to defend us other than our fist.

It was like I could get to it fast enough, but once I did I started spraying them.

"Fuck it's fucking mace!"

Once it started to get to them and impaired their wherewithal, I started attacking them back. Punches, kicks whatever I could do.

One of the guys that I punched square in the nose lunged after me and attempted to restrain me. He put my back against his chest and his arm around my throat, holding me up high enough for my feet to dangle.

"Yeah Zo. What now?! You're lil hoe is trying to fight for your weak ass."

I could see that Zo was in and out of consciousness. His nose and lip were both bleeding as he struggled to pull himself up off the ground, particularly favoring his right knee.

"Aye man, lets roll we're done here," one of them said.

"Look how pathetic this nigga looks," they laughed at Zo, "where's mister superstar now?"

"You're cowards! Whoever you are! Let me fucking go!" I spat.

I kept kicking a wiggling and kicking to get out of this dude's grasp.

"Let her go. We're done. Let's go!" another voice demanded.

I fell to the ground from being let go so suddenly. They ran back towards Zo's car, but got in a car that was parked next to it. I made sure I had a clear picture of it in my mind.

"Izzy."

The way he called my name sounded like desperation. I ran over to him. Bloody, sweaty and forming bruises.

"Oh my God, Zo. We gotta get help. Are you okay? Can you make it to the car?"

He nodded and stood up, but was super off balance and woozy looking. I  grabbed out backpacks and put his arm over my shoulder to give him something to lean on and helped him walk to the car.

Suddenly, he completely gave out and we both fell. I noticed that his eyes were closed and there was no sign of him breathing. My first thought was to do CPR. I leaned over as he lied on his back, pumped his chest three times then pinched his nose and opened his mouth to give him air.

"Come on, Zo. Come on," I said, repeating the steps again.

After no response, I started to freak out on the inside but did my best to stay calm and try again.
