Listening to his gut instinct, Emmet decided to wait to tell his family about the tablet before he even found out what the heck this tablet even was. This could possibly be some solicitor trying to sell us something, Emmet thought. It could even be a piece of a wall that broke down somewhere…
Emmet went home, straight to his computer, to look up what this tablet could be. He typed into Google: Tablet with a letter inscription. He found something that said:
Tablet with Greek Inscription of a Letter from Emperor Hadrian..
He took a look at the picture in the link…Nothing that looked like Emmet’s tablet. So, he kept looking at other sites. More “Greek inscription of a letter from the Emperor” stuff. This wasn’t it. Maybe this is the same tablet, but this one is older, he thought. Then, he took a penny and started to scratch off the tablet, thinking that the “Greek inscription” will appear in Emmet’s eyes.
Nothing.
So, he kept searching….and searching…and searching.
Eventually, he found something. It said:
One-Piece Tablet Found in the Trees! Click on the Document for More Information.
This must be it, Emmet thought. So, he clicked on the document so it could download. Excitement filled Emmet’s body. He actually was going to solve this unexplainable mystery! And then, the worst possible event happened. At 33.33%, the computer got some type of virus and became frozen.
“Damn it!” screamed Emmet as he banged on the keyboard. He decided to call a computer programmer for help. Emmet wasn’t going to walk away from this one, not from being so close to his goal.
“Worm Hole Computer Programming Help Desk, how many I help you?”
“Hi. My computer got a big virus, and I don’t really know what to do.”
“Well you called just the right place! What’s your address?” the person said.
“5783 Holly Street, in Juttingburg,” Emmet said.
“Okay, I’ll be over there in just a minute!”
“Okay, thank you. Bye!” After he hung up on the…the…Hole Worm…Worm…..Oh, right, the Worm Hole Computer Programming Help Desk (Even the fourth dimension can get confused sometimes), Emmet decided to have a talk with John. He saw him outside throwing a ball around. This is the perfect time, Emmet thought.
“Hey, son,” said Emmet softly as he opened the door outside.
“Hey Dad….I don’t really want to talk right now.”
“I know…I know…But just hear me out. I’m sorry about what I said before. You can do whatever you want; go join the army for all I care. But, I just wanted to say sorry for the way I treated you. The life of a lawyer makes a man sick to his head. ”
“So, then why are you a lawyer?” asked John.
Emmet had to think hard about this one. Before he could even answer, John kept going. “I mean, shouldn’t you do something you love, not something that society tells you to do?”
“Well yes…but-”
“And shouldn’t you always follow your heart?”
“Well of course…but-”
“And shouldn’t you not care what other people think?”
“THIS WASN’T MY CHOICE!” screamed Emmet.
And then, there was silence.
“I didn’t take this job on purpose. My parents told me I should be a lawyer when I grow up. Being a lawyer runs in the family. But, for some reason, I was the only person in my family who didn’t feel right being one. It didn’t feel like my..…destiny,” proclaimed Emmet.
John mouthed the words, as if in complete awe that Emmet even said that word.
“Dad…I…I..”
“It’s okay, son, you don’t have to say anything. Maybe I was just jealous of you that you found something you love. No…scratch that…I AM jealous of you for having something you love. I never got that chance. Of course, I’m still very proud of your decision, and I think you will do great in the army…But, I just never got that chance, that chance to do something incredible, something I loved,” Emmet said. “But, you broke that pattern, John!” Emmet said as he shook John briskly. “You can change the Robinson way, and you can bring the dreams back! You can do it!”
Emmet got louder and louder as he spoke more. His excitement grew, but John’s expression stayed the same.
“How can I be your son, if I’m the only one doing all the right stuff? Aren’t you supposed to be my role model?” asked John.
Emmet soon began to realize the disappointment in John’s face.
“But…we can go through this experience together! Finding our own destiny!”
“Stop that!! I can’t take that anymore! We’re two different people, Dad! I’ll go find my destiny, while you try to find yours, we can’t just do this together!.......Can we?”
And then, Emmet did something amazing, something he never thought he could do before. He held John’s hand.
“Yes John, we can. We can find our purpose together. You and I. Whaddya say? Do you think I could be your dad again? I promise you won’t regret it,” said Emmet, winking at him, jokingly.
“Of course, Dad. You never weren’t my Dad. Come on; let’s go searching online for a good job.”
“Yeah, I bet there are a lot of good junior army places all around town,” said Emmet as both he and John got up.
“No, Dad, I was talking about you.”
Emmet was in complete shock. And, instead of saying something corny, they just both hugged each other, got up, and went inside. This was a good moment, Emmet thought. He even forgot about the stupid tablet and the broken computer. After a couple of minutes online, John and Emmet were able to find some neat jobs for each other.
And then, the doorbell rang.
