"Hey, hey Rene." Arlen whispered across the table. They were currently in their second period of the day, the class being general maths.

Julian, from his seat beside Arlen, glanced over from the text book in front of him to his best friends, curious about what he was going to say to the dark skinned girl.

Rene slowly lifted her eyes from her book, which was not the math text book, but rather a copy of some fictional novel with a rather pretty dark blue cover with some sort of silver lining and writing. How aesthetic.

"What are you whispering for?" She asked, her long main of curls tumbling over her shoulder as she leaned back in her seat.

"Because I can, anyways, I have a joke."

Julian grinned as Rene groaned and ran her hands down her face in dismay. She looked at Arlen with annoyed but loving hazel eyes. "Go ahead."

Arlen sat up and leaned on his elbows on the desk. "After periodic doubts about his vocational calling, the young chemistry teacher decided he was out of his element."

Rene stared at Arlen for a moment before a smile slowly stretched her lips, a light chuckle escaped her and she shook her head as she went back to reading, still smiling.

Arlen leaned back in his seat and turned his attention over to Julian, jokingly winking at him and casually swinging a leg over Julian's thighs.

Julian rolled his eyes affectionately and went back to doing his work, which wasn't much, he was dreadful at maths. Whereas Rene and Arlen seemed to have memorized the entirety of the text book and always got exceptional grades.

Julian guessed it was because they genuinely enjoyed the class and tried to actually learn. Which was humourous because Arlen had bad grades in most of his classes.

Glancing up at Rene, he noticed that she wasn't wearing the plain white button up shirt with the school logo. Instead she had just thrown on a white shirt with a crudely drawn school logo on the fabric above the left side of her chest. Julian bit back a laugh and went back to the honestly unnecessary math equations.

"I really don't see the point of learning what the ancient Hippocratic method is, and why are we even learning it in math." Julian mumbled, running a hand down his face and leaning back in his chair, letting his head fall back so he was staring at the ceiling.

"Amen to that." Arlen murmured back, absentmindedly bringing his hand down to run his fingers through Julian's hair with his eyes locked on the text book.

Arlen had always adored his hair, using every chance he could to get his hands into the messy strands.

Julian was suddenly very thankful that they had a substitute teacher for the period who really didn't care for what the students did, just told them to read the next few chapters of the text book and to not talk too loud.

The sounds of other kids voices filled the smallish room as a lot of the students had finished their work and used the remaining time of the class to socialize.

Rene stayed fixated on her book, her hazel eyes quickly flicking back and forth, she bit her lip and turned the page, fully invested in whatever fantasy world she was in today.

Arlen was facing him but his eyes were locked on the text book, head tilted with a concentrated expression, his leg was still across Julian's lap and his fingers still running through the younger boys hair, lightly tugging every now and then.

It was a nice, calming sensation that for some reason began lulling him to sleep. His moment of bliss between sleep and reality was abruptly broken by the sudden blaring of the bell through the loudspeakers.
