(Now this chapter will be the offcial starting, it will be set back in the present where the characters are still in high school. Where you, the beloved reader, will also learn how the previous chapter came to be.)
Julian's POV, twenty-two years before.
"Don't upset your father, not today." Were the whispered words of Julian's mother as she leant down to kiss his forehead.
The sound of yelling drifted down the hallway and into the kitchen. There was two voices, his father and his sister.
Julian stared at the kitchen table, slowly eating his bowl of cereal. The yelling got louder and he looked up at his mother.
"What are they arguing about?" He questioned, ensuring to keep his voice soft so that only his mum could hear him.
The red-haired woman sighed and collapsed into the chair next to his, her head falling into her hands. She ran a hand through her curly, messy hair and looked at him with tired eyes.
"Something to do with his work habits."
Julian frowned and nodded, and the two fell back into silence. His mum began staring out the window, her eyes glazed over, indicating that she had fallen into her daily dream state.
He inwardly sighed and finished his breakfast as swiftly as possible without choking on it. He pushed his chair back and grabbed his plate as he stood up.
As Julian washed his plate, he watched his mother and pushed the yelling echoing down the hall to the back of his mind.
His mother was still beautiful to him, even with her unwashed mess of once vibrant red curls. Her teal coloured eyes had dulled and looked tired and dead, though it was hidden under a sheen of false happiness. Her skin now seemed more ashen than the creamy pale colour that had caught his fathers eyes as a teenager. Her once fitting clothes now hung limply around her thin body. Her most noticeable feature was the birthmark that took up a little less than half her face. Julian thought she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.
But Julian had always seen her heart before he saw her skin. And she was stunning.
His train of thought was broken by the door to the hallway abruptly slamming open, and his older sister power walked into the room.
She didn't pause to greet their now attentive mother as she stomped around to where Julian was standing and grabbed a fistful of his shirt, a yelp escaping him as he was dragged over to the door.
"We're going. Now." Cordelia ordered and Julian stayed silent, he knew not to argue with her when she was like this.
Julian loved his sister, he truly did, but sometimes her anger gets the best of her and she gets rather aggressive without realising it. Mum and dad actually had to make Cordelia go see a therapist about her anger when she was 12.
Before he was rudely dragged from the kitchen, he threw a quick worried glance over his shoulder at his mum. Julian knew that his father would never dare lay a hand on his mum but he wasn't afraid to scream and yell at her until she was in tears.
Cordelia let go of his shirt when they reached the front door and he threw an annoyed glanced at her. He grabbed his schoolbag from the floor and threw it over his shoulder. Straightening out his school shirt.
"We need to pick up Arlen, his dad can't drive him again."
A wide smile spread across his face, Arlen was his best friend from when they were kids.
